I'm not for handing Detroit billions of dollars without some changes being made in the automobile industry. IMO, we've got them right where we want them on the oil situation. I read Thomas Friedman's column today and completely agree with him that in return for any bailout, they should be forced to committ to increasing fuel mileage and setting goals for other forms of energy.
I don't know what the figure could be, but why not a certain percentage less gasoline fueled automobiles every year of production over the next 10 years?
We should not be bailing anybody out without very strict and sensible caveats. I am outraged at how much latitude the companies we already bailed out have with our money. One is even using it to defend themselves of the charges they are currently facing...so we are paying both to prosecute and defend them. They are still getting bonuses and throwing the same kind of lavish parties that helped us get here in the first place. This just reeks of a back room scratching of the back. The European countries that bailed out banks had much more restrictions.

These guys have fought the govt for years when they've been asked to submit to new fuel economy requirements in the cars they make. Now they're coming with their hat in hand looking to be bailed out by the taxpayer after being inefficient and producing an inferior product for decades. Nonsense.
We all saw this day coming... and now its here.
In return for any bailout, force them to agree to average fuel economy of 35-40 mpg across their fleets... within 7-10 years. If they wont agree, then let them die, and let Japanese car-makers buy up their assets and infrastructure at fire-sale prices.
End of story. Next.

Absolutely!! I couldn't agree more. We've whined about fuel efficiency in this country and the oil problem since the mid 70's and now the ability to really bring automakers to solutions is in our hands, IMO. It's a golden opportunity that may not come again for some time. There is no time like the present to set this country on a path toward foreign oil freedom.
Also, what do you all think about naming a national car "czar" if you will for overseeing the automakers and disbanding the corporate boards and leadership? I'm still undecided on that portion. I haven't done a lot of thinking or research on it, but that has the sound of something Chavez would do in Venezuela, but maybe I'm wrong.

Well, that's something that would probably only happen if we had a Socialist president.
Oh wait...
