Dust & Ashes

Taking a look at the verses below I understand the reference to dirt. Man was created out of the dust of the earth.

But what about ashes? Why is that term there and what does it refer to?

Genesis 18:27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which [am but] dust and ashes:
Job 30:19 He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
Job 42:6 Wherefore I abhor [myself], and repent in dust and ashes.

I think it means to be humble. In the Bible when some was repenting and grieved, they would tear their clothes and throw ashes on themselves.
