But, its MY chair...
But its my chair….
Several years ago I had a recliner. Well, I have one now, newer, nicer, and bigger. But the old recliner was my chair. I did everything in that chair. Well, not everything, but, I did a lot in that chair. I read in the chair. I watched TV, talked with visitors, ate, drank, slept, and well, lets just say I did a lot in that chair. My chair. It was my chair.
The sofa, that was my wife’s sofa. The dinning room table was hers. Everything we owned was hers. But that was MY chair. No one sat in that chair without my permission. Every stain on it was put there by me… The worn fabric was worn out by me. The whole in the cushion was mine, caused by the screwdriver I had forgotten to take out of my back pocket before plopping down. It was dirty, ugly, and didn’t fit the décor. But, it was mine.
A discussion arose one night about MY chair. My wife suggested that maybe it was time to replace the chair with a new one. The mere suggestion was akin to her asking for a divorce and suggesting that a find a new, younger wife. I could not imagine ever sitting in another recliner- this one was mine. I am the owner of ONE chair in the same way that I was the husband of one wife. I was the Bishop of my chair.
My mouth gapped open at the ridiculous suggestion. How could she… how dare she upsurp such authority as to suggest the chair had to go. It was mine, and if it was to be taken, they’d have to pry it from my cold, lifeless fingers. It was part of me. My hinder parts fit perfectly in the worn out cushion.
“But this is mine“, I protested. “Everything else is yours. The TV, the stereo…the sofa, the refrigerator… even the king sized bed is yours. This entire house is yours…why would you take away MY only possession? Why would you take MY chair?”
Her answer was simple, but clear. “Because its in MY house”. Just because my recliner, worn out, but faithful… ugly but elegant, didn’t meet the criteria of a nice decorated living room, it was relegated to the trash. Just because it was HER house.
This is MY life. This is MY body. I can do with it as I will. Abuse it. Neglect it. Overindulge. I can go where I want. Do what I want. Say what I want. Its MY life.
But, MY life is in God’s House. To be a part of God’s House, to be a part of His Kingdom, I have to live by His rules. I have to live as He lives. I have to be apart of His House, fit in to His will. Like my old faithful, recliner, I traded my old, worn out life for a brand new life. Like that old, smelly recliner, I didn’t realize my old life was as broken down and wore out as it was, until it was gone. A new chair was purchased. It smelled better. Looked better. Even “fit” better. The new life I have in Christ is better. I am happier, life is fulfilling, I have hope, I rest and comfort, not only in my new chair- but, more so in knowing Christ. I gave up my old wreck of a recliner for a brand new super deluxe recliner - with no regrets.
So, this is MY chair. I can do with it as I please. I don’t eat in it as much… I’m careful not to punch holes in it. I try to not stain it. I care for it…I care about it. Its my chair and I am responsible for it. After all, it may be my chair… but its in HIS House.

Can this be applied to structured settlements?

Re: But, its MY chair...
Thanks, guys. I woke up this morning about 4 am, and this was the first thing that popped in my head. So, I made some coffee and started writing. As always (and as I'm sure you can tell) I didn't put a lot of thought into it... just wrote what I felt. I posted, then got ready for work.
Glad you enjoyed. And, Scotty post away. Just send the royalty checks every month!
