I Went to Church...

It was 1971, I had repented of my past sins. Problem? I didn’t know any
“Christians”; I didn’t have or know what the Bible said; I didn’t know of any
churches, except for the Catholic church: but I had seen the hypocrisy of
the priests there, at 11 years of age, and I had had decided that God was
not there. But, believe it or not, God had called me to repent, and I did.
Was I “saved”? Not by a long shot…a very long shot.

I was still visiting the bars, but NOT getting drunk anymore. I was there for
the “fellowship” and to play billiards. Anyway, on my way to “go play”, it
seemed I always passed by this building: light green, two story, and with a
funny name: “Harbor Christian Center”. I began thinking: "There must
be some Christians there. I wonder what they do. They can’t be like me: they
must be decent folk! I bet they have some tables and play things like gin
rummy, canasta, and maybe even have a ping-pong table there! Good, clean
fun", I thought. Then my imagination went further still: "Maybe I’ll visit there
some day and play a little ping-pong with them: why I might even meet a
woman, get married and become a good Christian, have kids and show them
how to play ping-pong, and gin rummy! Good, clean fun." And my sister kept
inviting me to church, and I kept declining. After all, I already had a God who
called me to repent, and I was not about to exchange Him for a religion! But
one day, I asked my sister for the name of her church.

That’s right: “Harbor Christian Center”! I did sneak in there to visit, one
day: I found out that they didn’t have a ping-pong, or canasta and gin rummy
tables. But what they did have was an old man with a tremendous voice, that
sang: “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, there’s just something about that NAME…”!
My God finally had a NAME!

Re: I Went to Church...

It is funny that you mentioned the song "Jesus, there is something about that name" and 1971. It was about that time that I heard that song for the first time. I was at some kind of church conference. I had been raised in church and heard church songs all my life. However that song was so powerful within a minute or two of hearing it song I began weeping. To this day I can just start singing that song in my head and it ushers in the presence of God.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: I Went to Church...

"Jesus, there is something about that name"

My Pastor tells a story of a conference/campmeeting in LA (I think) where Bill Gaither was in attendance. The song leader led the congregation in singing this song and Bill told someone after hearing them "Nobody sings my song like that". Not in a bad way but with an apparent awe of the reverence and worshipful way the Apostolics sang the song.

I wasn't there so may not have the specifics all correct, but it makes for a great story regarding the song and the power of The Name.
