In a church service...is all music supposed to be just saying "praise God, God is great" in several different ways? The bible speaks of edifying each other. Why can't some songs be songs that edify us and make us want to pray more etc etc or even teach doctrine?

Music is the language of the (or a) spirit communicating with the soul. Give me the music and I will lead the people in any direction that I desire. The deposed choir leader in heaven jealously seeks to become the music director of the church. It appears that he is gradually accomplishing his end goal.
