With the current generations, i7 is a unnecessary for just gaming. The current gen i5's are already 6 core / 12 thread chips. 8 cores just for gaming is overkill. Won't hurt anything to upgrade it, but it's certainly not critical. Personally, I'm more partial to the AMD Ryzen chips, but either will work fine.

This is all right in my wheelhouse. I work at a small computer store, and we custom build systems all the time for customers.
