I do tend to think my first thesis is probably the correct one. I know that many times animals can sense things we do not such as a storm coming, etc because of subtle changes in wind pressure, smell, etc.
I tend to agree with you on your first answer. Animals have uncanny senses.
Dogs have been trained to smell cancer in human patients.....
