Re: House Leaders Holding Rally after CR Vote - LI

So, the recap:

The Republicans had two amendments to the final bill:

1. In the event the Treasury Department hits up against its borrowing limit, one amendment directs how the government spending is prioritized to handle that.

2. Strips the funding of Obamacare, stopping its implementation.

Next week, the Senate will probably, as Ted Cruz has predicted, strip out the healthcare provisions and send it back to the House.

That is the point that Ted Cruz has said, ""Harry Reid will no doubt try to strip the defund language from the continuing resolution, and right now he likely has the votes to do so. At that point, House Republicans must stand firm, hold their ground, and continue to listen to the American people."

Some (Huffington, Salon, TheDailyBeast, etc.) are calling that a defeat, but it is simply the process.

We wait to see what takes place next week.

Press Release of Senator Cruz

Cruz: Fight to Save America from Obamacare is Only Just Beginning

Contact: press@cruz.senate.gov / (202) 228-7561
Friday, September 20, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives passing a Continuing Resolution that funds the government without funding Obamacare:

“Today, the House of Representatives did what Washington pundits only a few weeks ago said was impossible: a strong bipartisan majority voted to defund Obamacare. This is a victory for House conservatives, and it is a victory for Speaker Boehner and Republican leadership.

“The American people overwhelmingly oppose Obamacare — a program which is killing jobs, dragging down the economy, and harming the most vulnerable among us. They deserve a fight — and House Republicans are leading that charge.

“But the House was just step one. Step two is the Senate, where all accounts suggest Harry Reid plans to use procedural gimmicks to try to add funding back in for Obamacare.

“If Reid pursues this plan — if he insists on using a 50-vote threshold to fund Obamacare with a partisan vote of only Democrats — then I hope that every Senate Republican will stand together and oppose cloture on the bill in order to keep the House bill intact and not let Harry Reid add Obamacare funding back in.

"Now is a time for party unity; Senate Republicans should stand side-by-side with courageous House Republicans.

“The fight to save America from Obamacare is just beginning — it may well go back and forth from the House and Senate several times — and a united Republican front means that Harry Reid and the President cannot ignore the American people.”

House of Representatives Listens to the American People on Obamacare

Today, a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives voted to stop Obamacare while funding the government to prevent a shutdown. This is a powerful development for the cause of freedom, showing that our representatives are listening to the concerns of the American people about this unworkable, unfair, and unpopular health care law.

I love Ted Cruz, but the bolded statement is just completely wrong.

Republican: 228 Ayes; 1 No; 3 Not Voting
Democratic: 2 Ayes; 188 No; 10 Not Voting
TOTALS: 230 Ayes; 189 No; 13 Not Voting

There were 2 (TWO) (T-W-O) Democrats who voted for this bill. That is NOT a strong bipartisan majority. That's almost all Republicans plus 2 Democrats who have been against Obamacare from the beginning (Rep McIntyre and Rep Matheson). That's not a strong bipartisan majority.

LOL! David, I caught that as well, but didn't comment. I think Boehner, McCarthy and Cantor said the same thing.

Maybe he was meaning that these two, being from the beginning, are important on this issue.

They will put up a 'courageous battle' but in the end 'compromise to save America' will be the watchword of the day.

Matheson's statement after the CR vote:

“It is irresponsible to add unrelated provisions to legislation to keep our government running. I have always preferred straightforward legislating that avoids political games. However, I believe we should avoid shutting down the government, and I voted for a continuing resolution to keep the legislative process working toward that end today."

McIntyre's statement after the CR vote:

“Among many other crucial services, it is essential that we honor our senior citizens, veterans, and men and women in uniform by ensuring there is no delay in their monthly retirement checks, health care coverage, or military benefits. Keeping our government operational is vital and today’s vote does that. My record on the health care law has been crystal clear – I voted against it when it was first considered, have voted to repeal it dozens of times, and today voted to defund it. The need for health care reform is clear, but this law is not the right approach for our citizens, communities, and businesses."

Re: House Leaders Holding Rally after CR Vote - LI

What Cruz is doing is stupid and those who are against the Affordable Health Care Act on the grounds that it will be too expensive are being proved every day to be uninformed.

I hope Cruz and those who support him pay a stiff political penalty for their shenanigans.
