Women speaking in church

I heard this guy on the radio today speaking and he made the most ridiculous statement I believe I have ever heard!!

He was talking about Paul telling the women to be quiet in the church. He said that that verse is smack dab in the middle of a whole chapter of Paul teaching about tongues in the church (mind you, this guy obviously believes that tongues are wrong for today). So his interpretation of this is that the women in Paul's day had gotten out of hand and were speaking in tongues one right over top of another without no interpretations and were completely out of order in doing so. And that Paul was telling them that they needed to stop talking in tongues at all.

Then he said, "If you notice that even in the tongues movement today (that's the Pentecostal people of today he is talking about), at least 90% of them are women. Very few men become part of those churches or speak in tongues" Hello??? I believe the man should visit one of "those churches" before he makes a blanket statement as ridiculous as that!!!

Re: Women speaking in church

I heard a Baptist preacher read this text to his church this past Sunday morning. Didn't want to go there in any way, shape or form. LOL!

Here's the KJV:

Quote:
I Timothy 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; (10) But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
This is how he read it:

Quote:
I Timothy 2:9-10 "In like manner also women profess godliness with good works."

Well I don't see it like that I do beleive that he was telling the women to be quiet in the cor church and stop talking for some reason. I don't think it had to do with tongues but he did clearly tell them to keep quiet..

BAD WOMEN, speaking out of turn again!

Ask your husband if you can speak again! Definently don't talk in church!

Seriously, this verse has been taken out of context so much! We probably will never know what Paul meant!

I wonder what Sister Alvear will say?

Should be interesting!

Re: Women speaking in church

Another interesting subject where many Pentecostals want to have it both ways. They claim they don't take cultural relevency into consideration when dealing with New Testament scriptures but yet do so when it comes to the verses admonishing women not to teach.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Man you are harder than I am!

We all know that really we are dealing with a rhetorical problem, as...

It is impossible to ever get women to be quiet in church!!!

Never seen one yet that could!

Lord bless you women, why, if it wasn't for you gals we wouldn't have anything to preach against!

Re: Women speaking in church

TJJJ,

If you refuse to consier the cultural circumstances of Paul talking to the church about women's hair then you must refuse to consider any cultural circumstances for this admonition. It is quite clear;

1 Corinthians 14:34 (King James Version)

34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

Re: Women speaking in church

YEP, I agree CC1 that is why our women don't speak in any place of authority in the church while we are in service. Sing, prophetic word, tongues and interpretation, testimony etc... and that is it. They are to be quiet. Either it is relevant or not. Paul basis his points on God law and natural order. Can't have it both ways.

How do they sing, speak in tongues, etc. and be quiet at the same time?
