Since you folks have played such a huge role in our whole experience since Walt's aneurysm - and I want to tell you again how VERY MUCH your prayers have meant to me and still do even to this day! - I thought maybe you would want to be updated as to the latest wrinkle in our lives.
Please don't think that when I call this a wrinkle that I am considering it a bad thing necessarily tho. So what's happening? Well, Walt's boss called him in the office last week to do his annual review. He said to him that his quality of work is excellent - far above average, as always. But that his quantity of work has slowed down considerably. That is a big concern for them. (Walt is a civil engineer, for those of you who didn't know that). So he told Walt that the next time they do a lay-off, Walt will probably be one of the first to be laid off. Then he dropped a bombshell on him when he asked if Walt had ever considered going on disability.
Walt's company has a private disability policy. And we've paid for a supplemental policy to go with that one for many years now. In fact, we used that policy at the time of his aneurysm. So it wouldn't be like he'd have to fight for Social Security Disability. But still our income would be cut by about 25% each month. that's alot.
We're in the process of lining up the ducks right now. So we would appreciate any prayers. This is going to be a major life-change. I don't know if I'm ready for it or not. I think Walt is more ready than I am But God has not let us down thru this entire thing - so why would I think He's gonna drop the ball now! I do not! God is still in control and He still wants what is best for us, His children.
Thanks for your prayers, friends. I really do appreciate all of you!

Retiring can be difficult. I retired March 1, 1998 after 32 years with General Electric. I had turned 60 on December 6, 1997 and waited till the next year rolled around so I could get the extra 6 weeks of vacation. At GE a person can retire at 60 so I did. I received a small monthly supplement until I turned 62 and could start collecting unemployment. I'm 73 now (will be 74 next week) and my wife turned 70 in July. I get a monthly pension check from GE and my wife and I both collect Social Security. Between the GE pension and Social Security for both of us, our income is about 2/3 of what my 1997 income was. Somehow we make it on that, although we pay about $4800.00 per year for Medicaid and a Medicaid Supplement. We've just learned to live on less.

thanks, everyone. I know this will be an adjustment. But I also know that we will make it. God has never let us down yet I'm confident He will come thru in this situation as well. But your prayers are for sure appreciated and NEEDED!! thanks again.

Margie, we will certainly be praying for you guys.
when you look at the disability option and the 25% cut, how is that impacted tax wise? sometimes (If memory serves) the payments may not have as much tax implication so that might offset. check into that.

I will do that, Ferd. I can already see advantages - less gas money, less taxes, no work clothes, etc. But that health insurance issue still has me concerned.
