Ghost Writers

I have been reading a book written by someone who was a "ghost writer" for Billy Graham and a number of successful conservative ministers.

This has caused me to question what it really means when someone is a "ghost writer" for someone else. Does this mean they actually write the book for someone else? Would this not be deceptive for someone to publish a book as if they had written it, when in fact someone else wrote it?

I don't think it's deceptive at all ... many best sellers ... even in the secular world use ghost writers ... if done properly ... one is able to still hear the voice of the person who is authoring the book but written more clearly ...

A ghost writer will finish a manuscript or edit a rough draft. Normally they will do most of the writing, but they do use information that gets credited to the author.

They also do the research, but seldom write anything that hasn't been added by the author.

They are mainly hired by people that don't have writing skills or the time to put a book together.

A publishing company also hires ghostwriters to increase their book sales by having them write and then publish the work under a well-known name.

They get paid royalty, by the page or settle on a flat fee.

That would have to be just way interesting!

Almost all big time writers use Ghost writers. The writer will normally make an outline, submit stories and such, then the Ghost writers will normally put it together.

Thanks everyone! I have heard this terminology and felt I knew what it meant and you have confirmed this for me. It's just that I have always associated this with the secular world. I wonder if marketing and making money has caused some Christian writers to misrepresent themselves to the public. When I read a book and it says that a certain person wrote the book, I am getting an impression of that person and judging them to be a very articulate and creative writer. Shouldn't they at least acknowledge that although it is their life experiences or thoughts, the book is being written for them by someone else?

I think this is the world very well rooted in the church!

Yes, it means they actually write the book but they get the content from the other person.

I once had a friend that was a Ghost Writer for Larry Lea Ministries, he would develop a general topic, then she would take his tapes, message and sit with him to get more of his thoughts on the subject matter, then she would write a rought draft, he would add or take away and then she would fine to it.

She wrote it, but he got the credit. Thus you have ghost writing.

I don't really see the problem with a situation like this. They're busy, ya know?
