"Expecting?"
Speaking of pregnant women, does anybody have a tried and true technique for navigating the delicate scenarios in which congratulating is concerned? It’s a real minefield. I’m sure all of us have witnessed the error of somebody prematurely assuming another lady’s pregnancy. “ When is it due?” Oh, I’m sorry. Do you plan on getting started soon?"
Of course, the flip side is what almost happened to me tonight at work. Arriving a little late to the conversation, I heard a girl saying that the baby had “dropped.” Another clueless guy asked, “ Who dropped a baby?” I quickly caught on that the (how do I say this politely--weight-challenged) girl was pregnant, and I almost said, " I didn’t know you were having a baby!” Thankfully I kept my mouth shut. I think this has been my most effective approach so far…

I DID say that to someone this past summer. There really isn't a good recovery! Apparently, she was about 7 months along.

Re: "Expecting?"
When my niece was about 8 years old her Mom had just had her 3rd and final baby. So her grandmother was baby sitting her and her brother while the new Mom was adjusting to the new baby.
While they were at the grocery store shopping my niece patted her grandmothers stomach and asked her when her baby was going to be born.
She took it in stride, but I don't remember exactly how she responded.
She had a similiar situation happen when her first grandchild was being born and asked where the labor room was and they wanted to know if she needed a wheelchair. Seems they thought she was the patient.

Re: "Expecting?"
A lady in a church I went to many years ago showed up at church one Sunday morning with a newborn baby. She had given birth the week before and no one even knew she was pregnant!! Surprise!!
Same thing happened with my aunt. And it was her NINTH child! She knew she was pregnant and her husband knew. But no one else did.

Re: "Expecting?"
A lady I go to church with has been 7 months pregnant for 10 years now.
(I am soooo glad I did not ask her "When are you due?" 10 years ago when I met her.)
