When/Where Did Running The Aisles Start?
I wonder when running the aisles got it's start?
The same question could go for rolling around on the floor, doing cartwheels & running the tops of pews. (yeah... I've seen it... and he stepped on a baby.)

Re: When/Where Did Running The Aisles Start?
Probably started in reference to walking around the walls and then progressed to running!
I've often wondered why we view this as worship.
My old pastor used to preach against any form of worship that was not in the Spirit.
I've also seen him shut down tonges and interpretation when it went beyond 2 or 3.
I've also witnessed him shut down some cartwheeling.
But, he used to dance "before the Lord", when the Spirit moved him!

Cartwheels, seriously?

C'mon, bro!! It started on the day of Pentecost. They all acted like they were drunk... remember?

Re: When/Where Did Running The Aisles Start?
My guesses:
Rolling on the floor probably started as people fell to the floor or to their knees in the altar and shook under the power of God on the floor. Pentecostals were referred to as "Holy Rollers" but I doubt it was the same kind of rolling I've seen. I've also heard it preached that rolling on the floor is humbling and puts you prostrate before God. Uh... not always... but anyway.
Cartwheels-probably an outgrowth of either running the aisles or preaching on exuberant worship or both. I've seen people sommersault more than cartwheel, and it was a combo of aisle running and rolling on the floor. It was a little weird to be a woman in a church that cartwheeled, sommersaulted or rolled on the floor. It would be preached that we should and that people really on fire for God would, but for obvious reasons, women in dresses couldn't participate. Made me feel a little left out.
Running the tops of the pews: I have absolutely not the foggiest. This one never made sense to me. Maybe because the aisles were too full?

The thread title made me laugh, but this post takes the cake! I can see Peter Jame and John rippin around the upper room! NOT!

Re: When/Where Did Running The Aisles Start?
About running the aisles: in the churches where the pastor gets upset if anyone gets up to use the restroom, this practice can be very advantageous. I've been told by more than one person who's supper didn't agree with them that they ran the aisles to create a little breeze.
Yes, I'm serious, and these were some well respected and faithful long-time members!

Re: When/Where Did Running The Aisles Start?
I have done holy rolling under the power of God before.
Both times I was alone in a prayer room at church.
It was neither premeditated nor totally conscious of it.
Just happened in deep prayer.
Ended up a hour or so later nearly 50 feet from where I had knelt
Running the aisles perhaps three times.

Of course the real purpose isn't one of worship, but rather is a sophisticated mating ritual employed mostly by single apostolic men in an effort to show their "spiritual leadership" and maturity to prospective members of the opposite sex.

I'm not going to criticize any type of worship. Some people do it for a show but some people are just plain worshipping in the way they know how.
