So you think you'd be a good PasTor/Preacher

LOL...I used to think I'm better than my Pastor, and can preach better...

It really depends on what pastor your talking about. I've had several over the years. Some better than others and some just embarrassingly bad. They ALL knew scripture far more than myself yet at least one was like the dumb blond (who was extremely book smart -like an idiot savant) who had to write TGIF on her shoes.

I would consider it a complement for it to be said that I was a compentent preacher, and that I was surrendered enough to be used of God. Beyond that I ask for little else. Greatness is in the eyes of the beholder, and I would not mind being found great in the eyes of God.

Re: So you think you'd be a good PasTor/Preacher

I am reminded of David when he was chosen to be king of Israel. But while Saul was king, David did not force out Sau. In fact, David said, touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. So when I was restored by the Lord, i asked Him to lead me to a church, because nowadas, there is so many. In fact, another scripture comes to mind "Lean not unto thine own understanding, In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy paths"...so when I started attending, I believe within myself that I am smarter than this preacher, and could preach, and lead this church better. But if that was the case, why am I not the preacher/pastor? God showed me the time when Moses led Israel to battle, and Moses was on top of the mountain. When he held his staff, Israel would win, but when he let his arm down, Israel would lose. Here comes Aaron, and Joshua. If they had not assisted Moses in holding up his tired arms, Israel would not have won. Pastoring a church requires more than just preaching a good message. It requires the members of that church hold up the Pastor's arm in order to continue to win. Support your Pastor, no matter what you think of him. Remember, Do it, as unto the LORD.

Even if it meant that the...UPC, or whatever, didn't think you were so great? What then? But I don't fault anyone for attempting to work within a system, and I wouldn't blame you.

I would have some who liked me and some who did not. I do not care about what people whom I have never met think of me. I believe that the system is good, however there is more than just one or two groups that are going to be in Heaven. I want to hear Jesus say, "Well done, My good and faithful servant."

Re: So you think you'd be a good PasTor/Preacher

Better? How do you define better in this sort of thing?

I would venture that I would be DIFFERENT, but not perhaps better than my Pastor at Pastoring. I am not ashamed to say I am a better teacher than him. I am more gifted at it and i have more book smarts at my disposal. I am much better at information gathering and critical thinking. I am good at making fairly deep issues of theology seem easier and more relatable. All these are great tools for the teacher.

On the flip side, he is a FAR better preacher. He is exponentially better at drawing an emotional response and getting people to respond in the altar than I have ever been. He has a great homiletic and knows all the proper vocal changes and tones to produce his desired response in the congregation. He is also far better than I at biting his tongue and simply loving folks when they act like idiots. I would likely rebuke them more whcih carries the risk of having them leave and go elsewhere. He is better at the personal relations side of things.

It's hard to say I'd be better. I would certainly be different.

Then it sounds to me like you two balance each other out, which is what God has intended in the first place in the ministry, hence the five-fold. Each part of that five-fold ministry hold great value in the work of God.
