CHAPTER SIX
A Little Season
And God called the light day.
At this point in John’s vision, the holy book is not yet open. Its thundering judgments are still held in check, by these two remaining seals.
So sacred is this majestic book, that one must be qualified to even:
Look thereon
let alone loose its seven seals. And this qualified one…twice-told…must first be a man. Search was made far and wide…throughout all of creation…across every page of time…for just one, qualified man. But none could be found.
Moses did not qualify, nor did Noah or Daniel. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, had not the resume to open this book, or to look thereon. Neither Enoch or Elijah…though they walked with God…could read its fearful pages. No man could be found. All seemed lost.
Then, at the last:
The lion of the tribe of Juda, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
Only Jesus, the Christ of God, is qualified to loose these seals, to look thereon, and to read its pages. Because this word made flesh:
Wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
So sing the four beasts, and the 24 elders. This is that holy lamb of God, who now holds his finger on the sixth seal.
This next seal is monstrous…both in its size, and its impact. The first four seals were told in a scant two verses each. The fifth seal, is three verses long. But this seal now before us, spans 23 verses, across two chapters.
When Jesus opens the sixth seal, a whirlwind of activity begins. As the cataclysm unfolds, one is easily swept up in it. We would do well, then, to keep our bearing here. You’d think, in reading these events, that the solemn book had already been opened, and its terrible judgments begun.
But the book is still closed. One seal still holds it’s woes at bay. All seven seals are preparatory in nature.
The first seven calamities of this seal; pray we would call up our training, in the spiritual definitions of our creation. At least the major ones.
Stars are well documented in his word, as being representative of angels. Were a real star to be cast to the earth, we should be snuffed out as a candle…unnoticed by 99+ % of the universe.
The sun is, of course, the light of our world. God made it so on the 4th day. So also did my Lord say:
I am the light of the world.
This, when he appeared at the 4th thousand years.
The moon is a false light, having no light of its own. Yet; though only an imitation, it does hold tidal sway over the seas of humanity.
The more you study nature, the clearer his word becomes. At the quantum and galactic levels, it gets downright collegiate. But these basic definitions are crucial, to comprehending this sixth seal.
We begin with a series of seven calamities:
1. A great earthquake
2. Sun becomes black as sackcloth of hair
3. Moon became as blood
4. Stars of heaven fell unto the earth.
5. Heaven departs as a scroll, when it is rolled together.
6. Every mountain and island moved out of their places.
7. Every man hides in dens and caves.
And just for perspective, we should also keep the last events of this seal before us. It closes with a multitude which no man can number; who have come out of great tribulation, and stand before the throne.
While it’s not prudent to spiritualize away these great calamities, neither should we root like hogs in the earth. In this book, we must consider both worlds. If all of the spiritual creation, and all of the earthly creation, were clumped together in a single iceberg; then we would be but the tip, poking out of the water.
The earthquake is great…and no doubt real. You may have noticed an uptick lately, in seismic activity across the globe. His tectonic plates…the pillars of the earth…are mustering into position. And though great, this quake is not the big one. That one doesn’t arrive until the seventh vial. While this one is mighty, its only a lead-up…a positioning…for that big one.
The blackening of the sun, and the reddening of the moon, could easily be the results of this catastrophic earthquake. From our vantage here, the stars of heaven falling to earth, would seem a meteor shower. Timed with a great earthquake, such impacts would be devastating. Men would know of a certainty, that the day of the Lord is at hand.
