Top-named acts part of Choctaw festival

TUSKAHOMA — With temperatures barely reaching 90 degrees and only about a 30 percent chance of rain, all five days of the Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival should be just grand.

After all, this is Oklahoma, where the land and the things that happen on the land are grand.

The festival begins Thursday with a pageant to select the newest Miss Choctaw Nation, Junior Miss and Little Miss and ends Monday with an address by Chief Gregory Pyle.

Also included are free concerts by some very notable, famous singers.

Lisa Reed, editor of the Choctaw newspaper the Bishinik said, “Activities throughout the weekend include more than 100 arts and crafts vendors, dozens of food vendors, a free carnival, traditional Choctaw activities in the village area, buffalo tours, fast pitch tournaments, competitions in volleyball, basketball, horseshoes and much more.”

Also, door prizes “include two vehicles this year,” Reed said, adding that people must be present to win, must be 18 or over and a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.Here is a list of some more of the events happening at the upcoming festival:


• Sunday- Gospel singing at 2 p.m. Michael W. Smith at 8:30 p.m.

• Traditional Choctaw dancing and stickball exhibitions at 4 p.m. on the lawn of the Capitol Building.

Monday

• The State of the Nation Address by Chief Pyle and the inauguration of elected officials.

I know quite a few apostolics seem to be indicating they will be there this year to watch the concert...I am thinking about it....haven't decided, but more than likely I will be chaperoning the youngsters from the church I attend.
