Last night, the local Methodist Church here did a fund raiser for a little girl in Uganda, Africa who has cancer in her sinuses. She is 12 years old and her face is severely deformed and painful because of it. Because of the poverty level there, her parents' only choice is to let her die a slow painful death. The pastor of the Methodist Church had gone to Uganda a month ago and met this child. She committed to raising the money necessary for her cancer treatments ($150 a month is all they need!). If necessary she wants to bring her to this country for surgery. But only if necessary.
So the church decided to do a Musical Evening and take up a special offering at it for Judith (the little girl) and her treatments. They had their choir sing, and their praise band, the choir from St. Richard's, a couple of soloists, and the High School Jazz Band played (This Little Light of Mine and He's Got the Whole World)
They called and asked if Keith (my 14 year old) would come and play a couple of piano pieces as part of this concert. Keith said he would be glad to do it if he could play the song he's been playing non-stop lately at home. They didn't care what he played. So we went.
Turns out that the song he wanted to play was one called "Through the Fire and Flame". Anybody who is rock music fan probably has heard of it. It's the last song on Guitar Hero. When you can play it, you've beaten the game. It's VERY, very fast. It's actually written for guitar, but Keith decided he could play it on piano. So he played that and he also played a song he wrote himself (it's beautiful!)
The funny thing was that all the kids in the Jazz Band and all of the kids who came to see the Jazz Band play were sitting on the front 8-10 rows on the right hand side of the church. The piano is on the front left side. But when Keith played, those kids were literally right on the edges of their seats!! When he finished I thought they were going to EXPLODE!! They whistled and yelled and clapped and on and on.
And after the service, all the OLD people at the church came up to Keith to tell him how he played sooooooooo beautifully! They LOVED his songs. They were talking about the rock song!
I was about laughing out loud. I decided it's all in the ears of the listener.
