How to Apologize!

AFF is in the honeymoon phase, so I thought I would start this thread to teach folks how to apologize when they've obviously offended someone. Folks can refer to this thread when they need to apologize!

1. Admit you were wrong.
2. Acknowledge the hurt you have caused.
3. Ask for forgiveness.
4. Promise to never do it again

e.g. I was wrong for attacking you personally like I did. I know my actions have caused you much hurt, pain and anger. Could you please find it in your heart to forgive me? From here on out, I will treat you with respect!

Good luck!

note: I'm tired of hearing apologies that say, "If I hurt you"! Of course you hurt them!!!

This is a pet peeve of mine- that is NOT an apology- it's 'cop-out'.

Is it? Have you ever apoligized when you didn't thin k you did anything wrong?
What about love your enemies? There is a lot of things we are commanded to do wether we feel like it or not.

How is that a cop out?

It may not be a cop out, it could be an admission of guilt, but without malice. You said or did something that hurt someone but that was not the true intent!

When you KNOW you have offended or hurt someone, and you apologize by saying,"IF I have done anything, I am sorry..." You KNOW you have- take accountabilty for it...sorry if I pushed your button, Ron...

Even if you don't feel that you have erred, if someone got offended by your words, or your actions, then you need to say, "I am sorry that I hurt you, I'll try to never do that again.." JMO

You haven't pushed my button-I am sor....

No really, some people may feel that you took it wrong, and have no reason to be offended.

Just another side to the equation,

JMHO!

Humble pie NEVER tastes good!!!

When you have hurt someone, and you know it because they tell you, or you can see the bleeding wound, simply admit the hurt, take responsibility, ask for forgiveness and let them respond...............

"Obviously what I did or said hurt you more than I can understand. I can assure you that it was not my intent to do so. I am so sorry for the hurt I caused. Please forgive me and know that I will try my best to not let it happen again."

Absolutely!! And then let us be Christ-like enough to forgive and move on. We can hang a misspoken word or err in judgment over people's heads forever, when the truth is, none of us have arrived and we all make mistakes.

Especially in heated discussions, it is easy to say, "You're an idiot!!" when in reality, we simply don't agree with or understand their idiotic view.

Speaking of cop outs. Heres one. The "offender" says, "Im sorry you got offended". Hes not sorry he offended someone...he's just sorry someone got offended.

Actually I'd say he's not even sorry someone got offended. It sounds more like someone that KNOWS what the right thing to do is but just can't do it.
