Public prayer

I read the following article and found it interesting. It has to do with the inaugural prayer and using Jesus' name.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081231/...uration_prayer

Quote:
"For a Christian, especially for an evangelical pastor, the Bible teaches us that we are to pray in the name of Jesus Christ. How can a minister pray any other way?" Franklin Graham said. "If you don't want someone to pray in Jesus' name, don't invite an evangelical minister."
Quote:
Leaders of other traditions with experience in interfaith work said they respected Christians who felt strongly that they should pray in Christ's name.

But they argued that a request for some modification is reasonable for a presidential inauguration, considering it's an event representing all Americans.
So what do you think? Is it ok to ask religious leaders to change how they pray in public? Is it ok to ask a Muslim not to pray using the name of Allah in a public prayer? If it is, is it also ok to ask a Christian not to pray using the name of Jesus?

Re: Public prayer

And to hijack my own thread. I found the last paragraph to be exceptionally interesting.

Quote:
"I know that for Christians, Jesus is part of their Trinity," said Visotzky, who has taught at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at Protestant seminaries in the U.S. "For me as a Jew, hearing the name of a first-century rabbi isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's not my God."
I do believe that Jesus was a fully trained Jewish rabbi. To see it in print from someone quite qualified to make this statement was validating.

Re: Public prayer

I don't think we should compromise what we believe prayer should be, especially in public. Otherwise, is it still prayer ?, or just a show ?

I don't think so either. And I don't think we should ask anyone else to compromise what they believe.

But then I get hung up in a conundrum. What if what they believe includes harming other people? Or blowing themselves up? I don't include that when I say it's not right to ask others to change their religious practices to fit a sanitized public image sort of thing.

I don't know.

It doesn't seem right to ask the person praying at an event like this to change how they pray...since you know that before you ask them. kwim?

Re: Public prayer

Re: Public prayer

I have no problem with anyone praying "their" way and they shouldn't have a problem with me using the name of Jesus. I am not fearful to use it and if anyone doesn't like it, they can ask someone else to pray. I'm not being arrogant by praying in the name of Jesus, it is who I am and who He is....plain and simple.

Re: Public prayer

Makes you wonder why some people are afraid of the name of Jesus, or hate it.

Always has. Peter was told he could preach, just not in the name of Jesus.

Re: Public prayer

And some may be just public prayer. I dont know. that is something that I am probably not in mainstream about ... I mean like at the beginning of a game or something like that yeah..... but the station I DJ at has a prayer request line and most of the DJ's will prayer over the request LIVE on the air... I will just simply announce the request and for everyone to remember them in prayer. I just dont feel its right to pray like that on radio.... just seems like more of a show.

Am I wrong to feel that is innapropriate ??

I think if you do not feel led to pray for them on the air, then you shouldn't. If they call in a request for prayer, I think they probably want the other listener's to pray.
