This Pope is in very poor health and I don't doubt that he is miserable enough trying to carry out his duties that he would take this extraordinary step. Modern sensibilities do make their way into traditions and I bet this is the case.
You have to wonder how many Popes were either totally senile or so incapacitated that others were really running things behind the scenes. Perhaps he does not want to be one of those.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

I hope you are right. There is no way to know for sure. I'd say there is a 50/50 chance either way. I never used to think conspiratorially until I lived through one myself. Now, I can't help but see that there is a chance that things are not always what they appear.

I feel this way about our Supreme Court Justices. Some need to resign, I think at the age of 65!!

Most likely true, most of the dire predictions of the RCC have come to nothing, in modern times at least.

speaking of the nonsense, isnt there supposed to be a black pope who is supposed to be the last good pope before the bad pope comes in as the Prophet of Revalations?

In the old days an infirm Pope could just disappear behind the scenes but in this modern day of 24 hour media there is pressure for him to be both seen and heard. That is a lot to ask of an 85 year old man in extemely poor health.
BTW - The B&B we stayed at in Rome was in an apartment building across the street from the Vatican. We could look out our breakfast room window to the left and see straight across into the Papal apartments.
The wall around the Vatican is massive. Where we were at it was probably 20 feet tall or more with security cameras every few feet.
When we took that special archelogical tour we got to go through a gate and into an area not open to the public. The Swiss guards that let us in and that we spoke to looked like their uniforms were designed by Elton John.
