I tell you - I got mad at Vestal for dying! I loved her so very much! I saw the Happy Goodman's at the National Quartet Convention in Memphis when I was around 10 in Memphis and always loved her singing. When I got the news that she had passed away - I kept saying - VESTAL - WHY DID YOU HAVE TO GO AND DIE!!!!! She was so special and my favorite song even today is - I wouldn't take nothin' for my journey now - I've got to make it to heaven somehow, tho the devil tempts me and he tries to turn me around, he's offered everything that's got a name, all the wealth I could want or the worldly fame, but if I could still I wouldn't take nothing for my journey now.
I will have to agree with you on that. The Goodmans where my all time favorite group. When my daughter was small (like 5 yr.s old) I played my old Goodman records for her. I told her now open up and sing like Vestal. She can belt out God walks the dark hill just like here.
