In the old days an infirm Pope could just disappear behind the scenes but in this modern day of 24 hour media there is pressure for him to be both seen and heard. That is a lot to ask of an 85 year old man in extemely poor health.
BTW - The B&B we stayed at in Rome was in an apartment building across the street from the Vatican. We could look out our breakfast room window to the left and see straight across into the Papal apartments.
The wall around the Vatican is massive. Where we were at it was probably 20 feet tall or more with security cameras every few feet.
When we took that special archelogical tour we got to go through a gate and into an area not open to the public. The Swiss guards that let us in and that we spoke to looked like their uniforms were designed by Elton John.

Re: Pope Resigns!!!!!
American Cardinals will have unprecedented influence in selecting the new Pope. The Pope increased the number of American Cardinals to 19 and 11 of them will be in the conclave that selects the next pope. That number is only exceeded by the Italian delegation which is 28 in number.

Re: Pope Resigns!!!!!
I just want to know if an upcoming Pope will be the coming Anti-christ? That was just common knowledge -during the 80's.

Re: Pope Resigns!!!!!
I think the real questions that should be asked regarding what will happen if a black Pope is elected is what will the popemobile look like?
Will it be outfitted with spinners? Fuzzy dice on the rearview mirror? These are deep theological geo political questions that need to be answered.
