I do love the role playing games from a pure tactical viewpoint and have played most of the Ultima games along with the classic Bards Tale's and a few others. Anyone else remember Tunnels of Doom for the old TI?
The only online game I have ever played where you actually interact with others is the original Quake.

lol...I was playing Q2 for a while at MSN and then some Q3...but they weren't team based.
Enemy Territory and Wolfenstien Multiplayer are team based, Germans vs Americans
ET is free to download too and is based on the WM game...in fact same people made it. There are a ton of mods and maps.
I usually play engineer. They are probably one of the two most important classes. In one map your team has to guide a tank over to the other side and blow up a fuel dump. There is a small gorge so you have to build a bridge. IF you get it built the enemy Engineers try to blow it up with dynamite
They also build HQ and once that is done I think the dead players respawn faster. An enemy engie can blow it, but the fuse is 30 seconds. Thats where CVops come on. They can steal enemy uniforms and drop a radio satchel charge...it's kinda fun to run in as an enemy player, drop the charge and run out and hide and then blow it. Engies can plant mines and get more grenades. They only get a choice of two rifles and one of them has a grenade launcher in it, but it's a single short carbine or something like that..
You can go up in ranks....at some point you can get two side arms and go akimbo...pretty cool. The CVops has silencers. He can also spot mines and gets a choice of three weapons. Sten, paratrooper rifle (with a lame scope) and a sniper rifle with silencer. He also gets smoke grenades. Engies can disarm mines too.
Most of the objectives require an engineer. The other really important class is medic. They get more HPs and they regenerate HPs and they can pass out meds to heal others and they can bring a dying player back to life. The more meds a team has the more HPs you will respawn with. They are very important because rather than have to wait 30 seconds to respawn your guy can just be fixed....a good medic or a couple often means the difference in a game.
LTs pass out ammos, can call an air strike and a sustained air strike.. Medics and LTs get no choice of rifles, Medics can be hard to kill if an LT gives him a lot of ammo
Soldiers get a large choice of weapons. Flame thrower, Panzer (RPG), Vulcan like gatlin gun, machine gun and morter....I think maybe a sniper rifle too.
Kinda fun and free, but servers are shrinking as people are moving on to newer games.
Anyone have the new Half Life and play source online games? I used to play the older Day of Defeat, but I got tired of cheaters. That game and counter strike were so easy to cheat in, even though they were supposed to have measures to prevent it...it was axis vs allies
