Texas would no longer be part of the Union. The "republic" died in 1865.
The real issue with TEXIT (secession) though is to lead a secession movement among all or a significant majority of the states. That would be a secession from DC and would function more like an "eviction" from the Union of the current federal government. In other words, fire DC and reconstitute a new federal government through the Committee of the States.
Last time that happened was when we ratified the US Constitution back in the 1780s.
So Texas secession at this point is more of a way to pressure DC and encourage other states to really start thinking about what to do with this out of control federal government.
As for chances of success? Slim. With God anything is possible. But the populace are not currently on God's side, so...

Since this is tangentially related to the election, I'll post it here. A Michigan congresswoman has openly called for violence against Trump supporters. After a rant against those who support him, she said the following:

She has been censured and removed from all legislative committees and is under investigation by the state police, last I heard.

Today, President of the Texas Nationalist Movement, Daniel Miller, announced that the Texas Independence Referendum Act has been submitted for filing in the 87th Session of the Texas Legislature.
State Representative Kyle Biedermann made the announcement this morning via social media, declaring his intention to champion the legislation that will give the people of Texas a binding vote on Texas reasserting its status as an independent nation.

I heard about her removal from the committees, but not about an investigation by the state police. After the way she acted in the hearings, and now this, she needs to be investigated. She should also - at bare minimum - be removed from her position in the state congress. Just losing her committee seats is not enough.

I agree. But I am... pessimistic ... though, about anything substantial being done.
Just shows how many rabid communist America haters have infiltrated all levels of government.
