your answer speaks for itself.

Every bit of what you say is true. I believe that too, that even if the pastor of the man wanting to marry her, who holds quite a sway I believe in that organization, cannot mediate the situation, there is little to be done. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the situation.

I am thinking that racism is not the only "reason" why she cannot marry the boy. My family member is an active member of the church, and she works in the business that the church operates. It could be that he doesn't want to lose a valuable member of his church also, and is using the "race" card to cover the real reason for not wanting her to marry the boy.

His own daughter married outside her "race" and that was okay. So... makes me think that the race issue is just a cover.

Wow, SE, this is one of the nicest replies I have seen from you. Good to see.

Re: What kind of pastor is this?

There is not one black person in Racine(not my fault) and Joplin would have around 1,000 blacks in it which is 15 miles away. Seneca & Neosho have a very small population of black folks in them. However I do have a wonderful faithful black family who attend here they drive over an hour a service to some here from Oklahoma. I wish I had more blacks but this ain't Memphis.

To many there is a big difference between marrying out your trace and may a black person.

What was race of man his daughter married?

You might be wrong in some things but racism is not one of them.

She was white, he was Hispanic. When I attended the church, we were not allowed to date Hispanics. My sister had to break up with a guy just because he was Hispanic. BUT when his daughter fell in love with a Hispanic, that rule was adjusted, in her case at least. I don't know of any other interracial marriages at all that he has allowed.

Well I have worshipped at different oneness churches, and one thing I noticed is that if the church was UPC affiliated, they usually had very few minority members.

I have visited other oneness churches sometimes in the same area and I noticed that the congregation was more mixed.

There is a knee jerk reaction in some UPC pastors to deny any racism for it is not politically correct to be racist, but their outreach efforts show where they really want members from.

Some pastors were brought up in a culture that would not allow mixed marriages, so although it is not longer acceptable to hold such views openly, some pastors still hold such views in private.

Mildly looking Hispanic? Sounds silly but some go by appearance.

You know as well as I do he has always resisted anyone marrying and leaving the church no matter the race. By you folks moving to SA there is an extra bond that would not be in a regular congregation and I think in truth he has seen all of y'all as family. And to lose one is very difficult for him personally. I remember being at his home years ago and a girl was dating a boy from an unnamed state he was not happy because he was losing her. I was teasing him welcome to the real world. His own family were fussing with him. He reluctantly gave in but wasn't happy. I really think he loved them so much he did not want to lose not even one. We who have had family members and close church family members marry and move off it is a difficult thing but that is life.
