Secondly buying an extended warranty needs some consideration of the circumstances;

1. Budget - If money is tight and you are buying a $300 more or less computer buying a $100+ extended warranty does not make sense. If there is something fundamentally wrong with a component in the computer chances are it will fail within the factory warranty. Other than that it should last three or four years and at that point it will be outdated and you will want to get a new one anyway. On a $1500 computer an extended warranty might make sense but I doubt it on an inexpensive one.

2. Desktop vs laptop. Laptops have miniatureized compenents that don't last as long and laptops tend to run hotter. If I were going to get an extended warranty I would lean more toward it on a notebook / laptop than a desktop.

Last but now least there are only a few important MUSTS to look for in buying a budget computer. All else is gravy. Your minimum criteria should be;

1. At least dual core processor (quad core is even better).
2. Both Intel and AMD make good processors so I would not get hung up on which one to get.
3. At least 4 gigs RAM. More is better.
4. Windows 7 Home Premium operating system
5 At least a 320 gig hard drive. More is better and a desktop will have more but a laptop will probably have this at least.
6. Virtually all computers now have CD / DVD players/burners in them except for netbooks and some new super slim notebooks.

The gravy you may or may not get on top of that on a budget computer are;

1. built in webcam (laptop)
2. built in memory card reader
You mean you don't recommend a high end liquid cooling solution along with a Sandy Bridge i7 2600K processor for easier overclocking?

LOL!!! A little over a year ago I decided to upgrade my dual core desktop that had 8gigs RAM to a six core 1090t AMD processor based sys with a the time a better graphics card and 12 gigs RAM. All for video editing / rendering.

Custom configured and ordered December a year ago it was around $1600 with all of the super duper discounts, etc I could muster. Other than rendering video faster I gained nothing based on my computer activities and my first Dell produced after they stopped making them in America and outsourced them to Foxconn in Mexico has had issues Had I known I would have saved my money and kept using the one I had.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: Buying A New Computer

I knew I could get you geeks into the conversation by suggesting the BB sales rep! Two of my sons have computer related degrees, one Computer Science Eng. from TAMU and one CIS from T.Tech. If I ever had to shop without them I'd have been lost. But the sales reps are good for knowing what is on sale at their store and what kinds of rebates are available.

And as a complete non-tech person I'm all about the extended warranty because my boys are all that I am not. It is just too easy to get taken advantage of when you are out there on your own... when the store's only option to not fixing your 'puter is to give you a new one... they are...um...motivated

Go to Best Buy. Get one of the helpful sales people to help you. Find the computer with the most memory and monitor with the best resolution you can get for the money you have to spend. Look at open box items for a possible way to upgrade to a better system than you could normally afford. Save a little for the extended warranty. Brand does not matter as much when you can get your 'puter fixed or replaced free if anything goes wrong. Save the extra money and buy blazin' fast high speed internet. The best computer is only as good as what it's runnin' on

Now you will be all set for what you do and if you develop new skills and want to do something else you will be able to.

Best!
Just My Opinion but do NOT go to Best Buy and ask for help. First of all they will try to sell you everything they can think of that you "might" need for a new PC.

Second shop around, you might find a better deal on the same PC you want than just at BB. Also BB's warranty they pressure you to buy is expensive and often unneeded. The only thing I buy warranties on anymore is on anything I can't fix myself. But at Frys electronics their warranty is far less costly and they have a lot more choices usually than BB as well as good prices

Everytime I have tried to buy stuff at BB the sales person tried to lead me around the store with a basket and filled it with additional stuff to spend money on

My MB just crashed and Frys did not have a MB with SLI for my Dual core AMD FX CPU...

So I upgraded. I got an 8 core AMD processor on a gamers MB. The first time I had problems getting the drives installed and then the bios totally fried on me. I had to return the MB. I got a new one and got it all installed and it is a lot faster. My PC pretty much looks like the inside of that one but without the conduit stuff and with 2 video cards in SLI configuration

Re: Buying A New Computer

I always build my own and I always go with AMD because the cost less...when it comes to buying a laptop I get whatever is cheapest and best and that usually ends up being an Intel not because they are cheaper but because Frys has a sale and Intels mobile CPUs have been better
