But he brought change, some of it good but it made Americans dependent on big government and that's a disaster.

Reagan was a great president because he loved America and what America should stand for. He made real Americans Proud.

Ask 120,000 Japanese-Americans who were sent to prison camps what they thought of FDR.

Now that you mention it though he was just as much of a womanizer as Clinton.
I think the Kennedy's took the prize in that department.

Great Myths About the Great Depression
by Thomas Sowell (October 10, 2003)

They say "truth will out" but sometimes it takes a long time. For more than half a century, it has been a "well-known fact" that President Franklin D. Roosevelt got us out of the Great Depression of the 1930s. That view was never pervasive among economists, and even J.M. Keynes -- a liberal icon -- criticized some of FDR's policies as hindering recovery from the depression.

...those who judge by results point out that none of the previous depressions -- during which the federal government essentially did nothing -- lasted anywhere near as long as the depression in which the federal government decided that it had to "do something."

Ask the families of those lost at Pearl Harbor how they felt about the Japanese. Right or wrong, FDR did what he thought was necessary at the time. A war time president is never loved.

Interestingly enough this one was ...

Based on the events and the hysteria ... the sad event of Japanese internment camps is understandable if not justifiable. Do we pin the continuance of slavery and segregation solely on the slew of Presidents that could have done their part to end them?

FDR won a landslide victory in the middle of the Great Depression ... and won handily in 1940 as the nation braced for war ... and won hands down in 1944 in the midst of war.

We were talking about great/worst Presidents so the wrong or right of it is an issue. Those were illegal detentions in violation of their Constitutional rights, which Reagan had to set right.

So are we saying he was great because he was popular or are we actually looking at the effect of his policies?

Some 40 years later ... making Reagan some type of hero for a cause that had been fought for some time is a bit disingenious.
