Re: What do you miss from your childhood??

Traveling to monthly youth rallies - (checking out all they boys from the other churches ....)
Pimento cheese sandwiches, frito boats, and sodas in the fellowship hall afterward

Well - I guess I can't say I miss it now.... but I sure enjoyed it while it was happening.

Fireworks on July 4th (we could do our own - it wasn't against the law then)
Fireworks on Christmas
Fireworks on New Years Eve

We did fireworks quite often!

Re: What do you miss from your childhood??

Hmm, what do I miss from my childhood? I sure wouldn't want to go back. But, I miss "back-to-school" shopping. We drove about 45 miles to the big town which rarely happened and bought our supplies and then my mom would buy us ONE cheeseburger at McDonalds (NO happy meals allowed!!). Man, I coveted those happy meals. But anyway, it was great just to get a cheeseburger.

I miss having more free time. In the summer, my brother and I practically lived at the beach and we swam all day long. We were in very good shape as we and rode our bikes everywhere! Watching TV and reading forevermore.

I did a lot of baking. I miss making rich chocolate cakes and they just seemed to taste better back then. No guilt maybe and I tolerated junk food better.

I think I miss the free time most of all.

Esther, we used to play "Money" (baseball) out in the corn field after the picker had gone through. We tried playing regular baseball, but jumping over the stubble to get to the bases was really hard. So we play Money instead We only a few gloves and we had alot of kids (cousins, siblings, neighbors, etc.) so we had to take turns.

Re: What do you miss from your childhood??

The Cocopah Indian Reservation my grandfather lived on in the dunes or Somerton, AZ!
No, electricity, adobe huts, raising chickens, pulling big hairy spiders out of my shoes every morning, making my own toys, walking 4 miles into town to watch "Lost in Space, Capitan Nice, and Mr. Terrific" in the window of the furniture store in downtown Somerton, AZ!

Many of the things I miss is living without what we have today.

I miss the sound the pans clanking together on Sunday afternoon.

When mom had to make us a dinner. I miss the smell of real food.(No Microwaves)

I miss the sight of black birds filling the sky in the Spring and fall.

Where did all those birds go?

I miss the sight of the old VW Bug and the sound of their whining engine.

I miss the guys in the neighborhood going to the park and playing baseball.

I miss having one TV show a week to look forward to.. Not 1300 channels...

I miss watching the Walton's with my entire family.

I miss the ring of the old telephone.

I miss how heavy the car door was.....

I miss the gum in the baseball card pack.

I miss playing jacks with my brothers and sister.

I miss reading Louis L'amour novels... I read them all at one time.

What happend at the end of the Sacket series...

I miss my third grade teaching reading us the bible.

yes that was 1971 and prayer and the bible were already taken out of the public school's.

But do not tell that to Mrs Greene who had been teaching third grade since 1940....

I miss having a quarter and buying a candy bar and a $.10 grape 10 Oz soda in the machine that you reached in and slide the bottle out after you dropped in your silver dime.

I miss looking through my mom's change while in church and saving the Buffalo nickels.

I miss the pride we had when we landed on the moon on my 5th birthday on July 20th, 1969. Remember how everyone waited until the news man told us the feed will be coming. Then it took another 30 minutes....

I miss Evil Knievel doing just he will never make jumps.

I miss the kids all having their favorite lunch box at school.

I miss all the friends that I had over the years since we lived in so many states.

I miss the going out to eat on Sunday night to Shakey's pizza and staying till they closed...

I miss hearing my dad preach.

I miss hearing him pray...

I miss my huffy bike with the Banana seat.

I miss those stormy nights when the whole family would meet in the hallway.

We would talk about the crazy things our grandmother would do.....

Family life was more simple and people actually talked to each other.

I have gone months sometimes without talking to family.

We have facebook,email and forums....

I miss talking to a girlfriend all night on the phone.

That was a bad thing back in the "70's".

I miss the police officers walking the beat and talking to them in the neighborhood park.

I could go on forever......

I am 44....

Re: What do you miss from your childhood??

Sleeping in the backyard with siblings and neighborhood friends, the neighborhood grocery where we rang up a tab and paid at the end of the month and everyone knew whose kid you were, brownie scouts and girl scouts, riding my bike to the library and losing myself in hours of reading, campouts and family vacations, youth camp (started as a child and went every year 'till I was old enough to be staff), after church eating around the table with friends of our family, dad calling me 'chatterbox', Easter outfits my mom made complete with hats for she and my sister and I to match, grandma taking me to Murphy's 5&10 for a grilled cheese and coke, innocence, safety and the love of grandparents and loved ones who have passed on.

Wink Re: What do you miss from your childhood??

So many things were simpler, I still wouldn't want to go back, but the memories are great

Playing along the creek, crossing it stepping on rocks, walking thru the tunnel under the street where the water flowed

Playing kick the can in the street
Ball hopscotch and rock hopscotch; not sure I could still draw the formations (with chalk)
roller skates that clamped on your shoes
walking to the corner store and buying treats for a penny or a nickel
In fact your mother could write a list and send you for 2 or 3 things; I remember neighbor kids getting cigarettes for their mother

as has been mentioned the glass bottles of pop for a dime; the pop machine that you lifted the lid and slid the bottle along a track and when the coin was inserted you could lift it out

lining up in the hall in grade school for polio vaccinations

or lining the wall of the hallway facing the wall, on our knees, heads down for a civil defense drill (the Krushchev era)

fellowship meetings, and there was always sandwiches and cake served afterwards
