The Early Church

Does anyone know enough about church history to say what happened to the early church? did the early church evolve into the roman catholic church when constantine converted or did the early church continue as an apostolic remnant? how did the apostolic church fade away? what does this mean for christ's prophecy, the gates of hell shall not prevail against it?
