I have most of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir's music & enjoy them quite a bit.
I am listening to Be Glad now & am amazed at the talent they have.

They apparently started recording this CD in late Sept 01 just after 9/11 and there were both Church members and Choir members in the twin towers that day.
The Choir members came out but some Church members did not.

I did a little bit of research on them and they are a 10,000 member congregation of mostly, but not all, African Americans, but led by a white Pastor & his wife.

That is neat.

I heard that they believe Acts 2:38 but don't believe or teach the same holiness standard as a lot of the UPC.

Does any one else like thier music?

I'v been there. They have a great choir. The atmosphere of
the church is disciplined and together. I liked that.

They don't preach Act238. Their pastor had a background
many years ago in UPC but they do the sinners prayer at
BT.

As great as they are, There are choirs in Brooklyn that can
sing cirlces around BT. They just don't have the money or
exposure.

That is too bad!

You mean Pastor Cymbala was once UPC?

They are well disciplined!

There are better choirs there?

Where are they?

What are they called?

I believe that Cymbala was in Indianapolis and sat under
NA urshan OR his dad did when he was in his youth.

Ron,
Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire is an excellent book by Cymbala. If you haven't read it, it's worth checking out at your local library.

I don't know if he was actually a part of the UPC, but possibly was influenced in some way like TD Jakes.

Although I'm not a big J. Cymbala fan (personal reasons; don't ask!), I do admire what he's done in Brooklyn. Their church is built on their weekly Tuesday night prayer meeting (I think that's the night) - they do believe in prayer! There are a lot of wonderful people there.

I worked there for a few years back in the 1990's. I buy most of my Christian books and resources online nowadays, so I've only been back there a few times since then. But the owners, Steve and Rose, are cool people. They've always been very good people to me.

In my church, as a kid, if you were a lady and you didn't wear a "covering" on your head, you were sinning in the sight of the Lord. They preached that the prayer cloths aka "doilies" were not enough, unless they covered the majority of the top of your head. Hats and veils were preferred.

Yes in DC. I heard he was wuite a man. His church is NOTHING
of what it was when he was alive

It was a NASTY split!! ended up in fist fights, they had to

There are 2 orgs. Campbell was over one of them and Rogers

With the chaos of NYC surrounding you, going into BT is like an oasis of fresh air. I think part of it is because of the somewhat controlled atmosphere Cymbala encourages. But I've been there when tongues and interpretation has gone forth and there was incredible spontaneous response to it.

Also I have yet to attend a church other than BT where the congregation literally outsings the choir. And thats pretty amazing considering the choir is 250 voices strong.

I dont think it reminds me of some of the wild campmeetings I attended when I was young , however BT seems to always include and old song into there worship.

I've always wondered how an unchurched unbeliever feels when they would walk into BT. The unity in spirit is almost tangible (and the building is beautiful).

I would highly encourage anyone to visit while in NYC. :thumbsup

I'm not sure how many members are in the choir. The choir loft seats between 240 and 250. When the choir does a special, I've noticed some members come on stage and fills in the center aisle of the choir loft. I would think there is some type of rotation.

While the Global group is not exclusively Oneness, most pastors who belong either are or have strong Oneness background. Basically I would consider it a Oneness group overall - in spite of them having a few who are cassified better as Trinitarian.

The group's statement of faith intentionally avoids reference to the "Trinity" and "Three Persons".

I agree that I don't ever think Jim Cymbla has been an actual member of Global. He has been a guest speaker at their conferences and knows many of the pastors though.

I have enjoyed hearing Jim Cymbla preach at Christ Church Nashville and at one or two Global conferences when they were held in the Nashville area several years ago.

He has done a tremendous job but suffered a lot of heartache also. His daugher left the church and he and his wife were in fear for her life and soul for several years until she got right with God and straightend out her life.

I remember about ten years ago ABC Nightly News had a person of the day feature where they would do a one minute or so mini documentary about some notable person.

One day their person of the day was the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir! They showcased how many of the choir members were saved from lives of drug abuse, prostitution, living on the street, crime, etc.

It was as if BT had paid a half million bucks for a one minute advertisement on national TV. Very nice.

There is another church in NYC that is doing great things- Redeemer PCA- Their pastor started this church in 2001, I think, and today they have about 5000 attendees. They really preach a comprehensive Lordship and reach out to the up-and-outers. There pastor is a marvolous communicator and has written "Thee Reason for God". He is the most transparent minister that I have every heard speak.

That's them! Great folks...my mom used to babysit their kids waaaay back in the day

If you hold UPC license you will now have to be placed "under question" since you have expressed admiration for exUPC folks who have "gone charismatic".

Such a shame. You seemed like such a nice guy.

I went to a service there nearly 10 years ago and the choir was great. I have a couple of their CD's that I enjoy listening to.

:highfive I love BTC!

As for them not believing or teaching the same holiness standard as the UPC, I certainly hope no one is measuring that against them...:nah

The BTC does sing great.I prefer country and southern gospel, but that is just me.
I don't know Pastor Cymbala but I appreciate his teaching on prayer. And whatever good he has done,I won't take anything away from.

I found one particular YouTube member's profile that has several clips of BTC singing for a prison in Louisiana. And to see some of the prisoners worshipping is very heart-warming and humbling, IMO.

Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/user/topchristianmusic#p/u

Here's a few of the clips:

Back in my UPC days my choir did a bunch of their music. Great choir, church, and pastor.

They have used a good bit of Apostolic music over the years. Lanny Wolfe, PCD, and a few others. You've got to give admiration to people who do the job that they have and don't have purple hair or sit on gilt chairs.
