I am asking my friends on AFF to pray that this storm does not do the damage that Katrina did to our state. As many of you know, I live in Louisiana. It looks like we may have a repeat of Katrina in 2005. We have been watching the storm for the past couple of days. I have already been in contact with our relatives in New Orleans and most are already preparing to leave. We happen to be in Shreveport right now and plan to ride out the storm up here. During Katrina, we had our relatives, my aunt and uncle with their 2 dogs, come and stay with us to ride out the storm. What we did not count on, was my uncle's invalid mother, his two chemically dependent brothers, and a stripper girlfriend. The other thing that no one counted on, was that they would be staying with us for 6 weeks. It did make for some interesting times and we had many stories to tell. My aunt and uncle were fortunate that their house was not affected. His mother lost her house and my aunt's daughter lost her house. Both of which have been rebuilt. I will try to keep you up to date on the happenings, as we plan to go back home as soon as the storm passes.

I'm already praying my friends......our family lives in the projected path also. Most of the affected areas of Katrina have just now begun to make a little headway into repairs done from that storm. I dread to think of another storm of that magnitude tearing through again.

Our Governor seems to be on top of things. He has already called a "state of emergency" and could start evacuations by Saturday.
My oldest son works offshore on an oil rig in the Gulf right out of the New Orleans area. He called a couple of days ago and said that if the storm kept tracking along the anticipated path they would be evacuating the rigs in the Gulf this weekend. I think his rig is about 50 miles offshore.

I think they learned their lessons of the cost of inaction from Katrina.

Quite a change from your prevoius Governor. I also don't think Bobby is going to let the idiot New Orleans Mayor sit on his butt and not evaculate the city if needed like the Mayor did with Katrina.

Blubayou: you, and everyone else are in my prayers. May no harm come to those who trust in the Lord. I say this to one in all who live in these strom prone areas... if you need a place to stay, I'm in NE Alabama. My door is open. We usually get some affects from the storms in the Gulf area, but not real bad. Just know that if you decide to leave, I'll put up as many as I can.

I live in South Mississippi and Katrina devastated us here, exactly 3 years ago in the morning. I'll never forget it for as long as I live. There were 10 of us riding it out in the church and the church WHICH WE WERE IN, suffered 1.2 Million Dollars worth of damage. Because of that, people here are now easily panicked and understandably so, if you were here.
We have 4 Wal-Mart Supercenters here and they are all completely sold out of water, batteries and flashlites already. There is a huge run on Gas right now. I waited this evening for 20 minutes in a line to fill up. There were people filling up numerous gas cans and even 55 Gallon Drums. Everyone is buying everything up in order to be better prepared, should Gustave find his way to our doorstep.
I am praying that it stays away, however I know he must go somewhere. I pray for people's lives and homes. It would be unbelievable to have a repeat of Katrina. Lord, please spare us!!!

The cone of uncertaintly is still very wide and uncertain. We are included in that cone as well. From all the reports I am seeing it is too early to know where it is going.
But if you go by the center of the cone it looks to me like La is the prime target, but they keep saying it is too early to know.
I hope ALL of us make it without damage.

Part of this is prudence; part is media hysteria who'd like nothing more than for this to hit New Orleans for a big story.
Right now, this is a tropical storm heading SOUTH. No one can say for sure where it will end up.
Jindal of course will order the evacuation of New Orleans if this gets in the Gulf as a hurricane and rightly so.
But there is a lot of overreaction at this stage.
My daughter is in New Orleans at Tulane. They will be bused to Jackson State University in Jackson, Ms. in the event of an evacuation.
After Katrina hit our church opened up our camp facility for refugees. The dorms sleep 240 people... I'm sure they will do it again if it's needed.

According to the NHC, it's moving west at 5mph.
Regardless, it probably is overkill to some extent, but on the other hand, if you wait till you have to evacuate, getting supplies, gas, and fighting traffic can be a huge hassle. I'm sure by Friday night or Saturday they'll have a better idea of when and where it's actually going to hit.
I do think it's funny that the media is so focused on New Orleans. First of all, the storm was predicted yesterday as a direct hit on NO, and now the prediction is more toward the east/central coast(LA); secondly, you'd think that NO was the only place hit by Katrina. LOL!!!! Let's not worry about Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Mississippi gulf cities, etc. :rolleyes2

And I'm sure gas prices are going up as we speak!
Doesn't count that the gas in the tanks at the stations have already been paid for at a certain price, but knowing the next round will cost them more they jack the prices up!

The northeast quadrant of the storm is usually the most concentrated wind/water in a hurricane. That's why Katrina devastated Gulfport/Biloxi even though the eye was much further west. The primary source of damage in NoLa was from the levee failure and not from storm surge/wind.

Bottom line of it is this... We're all praying that it doesn't hit us, but it IS gonna hit somewhere and it's simply too early to know where. The cone is still large on the Gulf Coast... Here in South Mississippi, just Northeast of New Orleans, we're praying don't let it come here... Louisiana is praying the same... Texas and Alabama are praying the same thing... Who is God going to answer? The storm is going to hit somewhere, so let us pray for everyone's protection... Life is most important, then property. God you already know where this thing is going to... May your hand of divine protection be with each and everyone one of us. We lived for over 3 weeks with no power from Katrina... 2 weeks with no running water... The heat was sweltering and it was one of the most miserable times of my life, yet it was survivable and many people in our world are going through worse. Those things are tough, but thank God we survived. Life is most important... God is in control and it is in Him we must place our trust!

You'll definitely want plenty of Gas, because those generators will burn it up quickly... My Dad's church just order 500 Gallons for their community. Should it not hit there, they'll transport it to those in need.

Well during Katrina, our hospital (in Mobile) was on generator only for 3 days. I work on the 8th floor, so it's gonna be hot and miserable. I'm really scared this one's gonna go AL/MS state line and that will give Mobile the worst side of the storm.

Watched the Baton Rouge news tonight. There are gas stations running out of gas already and people waited for the delivery of generators 7 hours at Home Depot. So things are getting crazy. If they start contra flow of traffic Saturday evening they will cancel the LSU Football game. If you know anything about Louisiana this amounts let you know just how serious the situation is!!!!!!!!!!!! They will make that decision today.

As you know my husband usually works in La and all of his co workers are from there and the big talk is that they will probably cancel the game. A announcement will be made this evening for sure but they are sure they would have time to play the game but they are afraid with everyone evacuating possibly that they would 1 not have enough people at their game and 2 that it would be too difficult for their fans to evac after the game because expected evacs are to begin tonight and they think that it would make the highways too busy if they waited until after the game thus the concern. I say play the game too but who knows.
The governor is wanting to show up because of the past experience or lack of with the previous governor during Katrina so they are probably gonna go overkill but its better than no action at all in my book! :)

Yea, I HATE GUSTAV!!!!
On another note, Gustav is going to sink the Republicans.
This storm is going to hit on Tues. That means the Republicans have to either have their convention during the storm and the dems will charge them with not caring about poor southerners.... AGAIN....
OR they will postpone the convention which will be a new impossibility and will end up with very few people and very little excitement there. thus killing the value of the convention.

Right.... so next question... what do you do with 30,000 reservations for a national convention? what do you do logistically to get 30,000 people who have taken vacation next week and get them to move it to some other week?
what about all the people who would do that but when they try to move their hotel reservations, it bumps into some other convention and there arent any more rooms?
answer? you end up with about 1/3 of the people.
and when do you have it? the next week? well all the news outlets will be talking to the idiots who didnt leave their horse trailer homes and half their famlies are dead and they are blaming the government (read republicans) during that week.
Go to the next week? that week will be hang over week and everyone will be all depressed and the Repbulcans will be laughing it up while the rest of the nation is in morning for all the stupid missing houses the republicans tore down during the storm.
the next week? by then, Barak Obama will have a 30 point lead, republicans will be seen as incompitant and besides that it will simply be a day late and a dollar short.
we have been officially blown over. this really stinks.

Im sick.
Did you change your mind after the Palin pick. I don't think Gustav can sink this one.

The latest information put Gustav up to a Cat 4 Hurricane before it comes ashore. Some of the models are predicting a veer to the west before it comes ashore- Watch out Texas and Lake Charles. They are still saying that New Orleans is under the gun. Soooooo I think they do not know what it will do. They are starting voluntary evacuations now and mandatory evacuations early Sunday.

Was on the phone to Sulphur Louisiana last night, looks like they will be told Sunday wether to evacuate or not, seems to me to be cutting it kind of close.
There was a 23 percent chance last night that the storm could diminish into a tropical storm rahter than come ashore as a hurricane. Will look again.

Well now it appears that Gustav is a category three hurricane with wiinds up to 122 miles per hour and is strengthening . Could be a category four by the time it hits Cuba.
Could strengthen even more over the gulf before hitting the Louisiana coastal area.

Please pray for my neice and nephew they have decided to stay in New Orleans. Their house did not get damage or water during Katrina. I tried to talk them out of staying , but did not have much luck. But for some reason they have decided to stay - Pray that they will change their minds and if they do not - that they will be safe.

When Katrina hit N.O. and then went into Mississippi there was not bad weather in Alex. Maybe a little rain. When Rita hit there was wind and rain in Alex, some without electricity. We live 40 miles south and lost electricity for 5 days.

We are heading to Austin in the morning. Staying at our FIL's. We are on the west end, so unless it turns more this direction we will only get rain and some high winds.
Just have to add this tonight. Michael Moore is sick!!
I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven, Moore said, laughing. To have it planned at the same time that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for day one of the Republican Convention, up in the Twin Cities at the top of the Mississippi River.

Tina, that is a very good idea. I had been thinking the same thing earlier today. I'm glad you posted this.
AG, are you going to have time to keep up with everyone if you are the contact person? I'm not suggesting you shouldn't do it. But are you in the path of the storm yourself? Can we help you with this task? If you are able and want to do it, that's fine. If you want some help, I'll volunteer. Let me know, ok?

It is very hard to decide what to take.
We are not sure if we are leaving or not. We will wait until tomorrow when they have a better handle on where the storm is heading. The 10' news indicate it may go more east than west giving us just tropical storm winds. That we can handle.
I really have peace about staying here. Hope it isn't because I hate to evacuate.
All the exit hwys are already bumper to bumper, gas stations are already running out of gas. Just NOT a good situation.
Unless you have gone through this you just don't know how horrible the evacuation really is!
Esther
08-30-2008, 09:46 PM
Massive evacuations cause the following:
1. Bumper to bumper traffic making a normal hour drive 8 hours or better
2. No gas to be had
3. When the gas is gone some stores close leaving no bathrooms. Folks were using the side of the roads for bathrooms with bumper to bumper cars driving by.
4. No food, not even in the fast food resturants.
5. No snacks of food to be bought in the stores.
6. NO water, no drinks to be bought.
7. Gas prices hiked up.
8. Short tempers
9. Fights over the gas when you can find a station open with gas.
10. Cars over heating from idling in the bumper to bumper traffic
11. Imagine this, many car wrecks, at bumper to bumper speed. Folks driving to nose their way in no matter.
Just a few things off the top of my head from our last evacation.
AmazingGrace
08-30-2008, 09:49 PM
Fights because of the wrecks
Police unable to get to the accidents.
Emergency Rescue unable to get to people on the roads who may need them due to the traffic
People getting sick from sitting in the heat
No Hotels to be found
Those are a few more from our experience that I can think of

Yes, Pastor Doug White's church was pretty much destroyed, at least some of it. He now has the new building up and in the dry, but another hurricane hit would really cause damage, since it's still in construction stages. He is a bit stressed, I'm sure. We need to pray for him and his saints.

Exactly!
I don't wish it on anyone, but I sure enough don't want it here. Maybe it could die a sudden death out in the gulf. :)
My oldest son works on a "jack up" oil rig. That is one that does not float but actually has legs that extend down to the ocean floor.
A lot of the time it is just in 50-100 feet of water but right now it is extended as far as it can reach which is over 200 feet down.
When it is fully extended it does not have the same rigidity / stableness that it has in shallower water. He said that when the wind hit 25-35 mph before they were evacuated that the rig was swaying enough that some of the guys were getting seasickness.
I sure hope it can withstand the 115+ miles of a catagory three hurricane or he may not have a rig to go back to!
