Her big night is here. What do you expect to hear from the Alaskan Governor and what questions would you like to have answered about her past and experience? What specifics will you be looking for?

Drudge has excerpts from the speech already.
Among the remarks:
On her experience as a public servant:
"I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids’ public education better. When I ran for city council, I didn’t need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too. Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities."
------------------------
On John McCain:
"Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

Great Huckabee line tonight about Sarah... "Speaking of Governor Palin, I am so tired of hearing about her lack of experience. I want to tell you folks something: She got more votes running for Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for President of the United States."

Ridiculous statement, she got less than 700 votes. Why draw attention to that.

I don't believe it would be a good idea for her to come out attacking like other politicians...particularly since she has much that can be exploited and attacked herself. I think her best bet would be to try to appear transcendant and above all the typical bickering.

She's doing a good job. The crowd obviously loves her, but that's to be expected. She's definitely not being timid about addressing her opponents, and she's doing it with a pleasant look on her face. ;)
Guiliani addressed the concept that someone questioned her ability to lead based on having 5 children, and said, "How dare they? They would never ask a MAN that question?"
Which is a good point...who asked Obama the question, "How can you be President, when you have children to take care of?" Very sexist, and ironically hypocritical coming from any liberal.

She gives a great speech and is an able communicator. No questions there.
Somewhere tonight though the Obama campaign is licking their lips. From what I gather, she's in support of the unending commitment in Iraq, drilling more oil wells, and tax cuts for corporate America and the top 5% because it'll trickle on down to the middle class.
Not one mention of the major economic trouble. Not one mention of the home foreclosure crisis. Not one mention of helping those who don't have health insurance coverage or other issues American's are concerned about.
She, once again, highlited to the American people, almost position by position, point by point, how close a McCain-Palin ticket would resemble four more years of Bush-Cheney. I think the Obama Campaign is smiling.

The speech that Governor Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years. If Governor Palin and John McCain want to define 'change' as voting with George Bush 90% of the time, that's their choice, but we don't think the American people are ready to take a 10% chance on change," said Bill Burton, Obama Campaign Spokesman.

I think they should have just taped it and run it another night.
Ridiculous statement, she got less than 700 votes. Why draw attention to that.
Its not a ridiculous statement, sir. It's a figure of speech. Its a hyperbolic comparison. The actual numbers per se are not the issue. The issue is the comparison of Palin's and Biden's numbers, relatively speaking:
Yes Palin got less than 700 votes, but her city had less than 5500 people in it. Huckabee is drawing attention to the fact that Biden got only 9000 votes when he ran for president of the United States.

I loved that!!! Her voice inflection, facial expressions, and mannerisms - perfect.
She was dressed perfect!!!
I told my husband that "She hit it out of the ball park"...Then Wolf Blitzer actually said those words about a minute later.
She was great!! Those CNN folks don't know how to take this. A tough woman who is feminine - but not a feminist.
She asked, "What is the difference between a hockey mom and a bull dog?...Lipstick...lol
She can "smile while she is putting the knife in" according to Anderson Cooper. Even Campbell Brown is "touched by Sarah Palin" talking about her family. What's next? Sarah Palin is a winner in the hearts of America if she does not win the VP office.
Go Sarah!!!
I was thinking the same thing and wasn't he kind to not steal her thunder when he came out? She was also respectful and gave him room on the platform to do whatever he wanted.
Perfect night!!!
She was strong, authentic, and straight forward. A great speech based on facts - not pipe dreams.
Jeffrey Tobin of CNN said it was a much better speech than Joe Biden's speech. He was right there!
Now he is saying, "She is NO victim"........She is not a victim because she would not accept the role of a victim.
The media has tried to destroy her and her family for the past few days. I think she had a lot of people praying for her. I know I prayed.
Regardless of the substance or anyone's position on her views.
Finally a candidate that has the ability to communicate.
She did not appear nervous, rushed, over excited.
She did not stumble over her words.
She was great...
She will be President...somewhere in the future...that woman has it going on!
Blessings, Rhoni

Mike, you must have a subscription to the DNC "talking points", almost word for word?
I thought she would spend the majority of her speech ripping Obama which is the VP's job really. She did a great job of it.
I also expected her to start helping McCain lay out his plan for what he wants to do and where he wants to take the country. She didn't and I knew the Obama campaign would be quick to point out the lack of substance on the direction for America.
A lot of how this convention will play out for voters, is on John McCain now because he has to give specifics and details about how he's going to solve the issues the country is facing. It'll be interesting to hear the specifics and the direction he has in mind.

Exactly - that's not the VP-elects job.
Yahoo article on McCain's speech tonight - "Mark Salter, McCain's closest adviser and top speechwriter, said the address will focus on specific policy proposals but would also shine a light on the promise of transforming Washington and asking which candidate was better suited to make good on that promise. It will also portray McCain as a selfless public servant who has repeatedly taken political risks and challenged his party when necessary, Salter said."

You are right, Mike. Palin has the base energized, but McCain will need to draw from the middle in order to win in November. It is a difficult line to walk because this country has been so divided by the media's constant railing on Bush and the current administration policies. If John goes too far he can lose the base, not far enough and he doesn't get the Reagan Democrats, it is a tough job.

What did you consider a low blow? There were some obvious jabs, its politics, but there where no low blows. A low blow is asking if SP can be a good mom and be a VP, and not asking if BHO can be President and be a good dad. A low blow is taking shots at her daughter. BREAKING: Sarah Palin "Winged" Her Speech Because of "Broken" Teleprompter
Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.
According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.
Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory, to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.
Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.

DENVER - Sen. Barack Obama's formal nomination Wednesday as the Democratic candidate for president brought with it praise for Obama and a barrage of renewed attacks on his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain. Some were on point, others missed the mark.
Some examples:
VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SEN. JOE BIDEN of DELAWARE: "Barack Obama will bring down health care costs by $2,500 for the typical family, and, at long last, deliver affordable, accessible health care for all Americans."
THE FACTS: Obama's health care plan does not provide for universal health care coverage. He promises to make it affordable and would require children to be covered, but not adults. Estimates of how many would remain without insurance vary. Hillary Rodham Clinton said during the primaries that Obama's plan would leave 15 million people uninsured....

Personally, I like sarcasm. I like the barbs delivered with a gracious smile. But that's just me. :D
Typically, the vice president does the "dirty work" of attacking the opponent, and the presidential candidate can focus on more generic interests and rise above the fray. That's part of what will make SP formidable--the potential ability to do her traditional job as VP candidate, and still come across as intelligent, calm and pragmatic.
If she continues in the manner in which she delivered last night's speech, Joe Biden doesn't stand a chance. He's simply not charming enough, interesting enough, intriguing enough or pretty enough. And he probably doesn't have the capacity to rein in his temper as she does, but that's purely conjecture on my part. You know women can often push men's buttons with ease, and smile calmly while the man roars into an insane, incoherent rage. :whistle

I agree that that is what is typically done, but I think that one of Palin's selling points should be and has been that she is not "typical". I don't think she should resort to appearing "typical". That would be the effective counterpoint to the Dem's "party of atypical politics" mantra.

Jeanie, I read the article and it seems a little confusing as to who exactly they are saying released what. I certainly do not like the release of anybody's personal info (whether they did not release the last 4 digits or not). This line in particular was a little confusing "Kevin adds: The Politico article which RedState mentions does not identify from whom the file was received, but it certainly doesn't say it's not from Democrats or a particular Democrat. That said, a better title might have been "Democratic opposition research report on Palin includes partial SSN."
I would not automatically lay it at the feet of the national Democratic Party particularly since it was done at a time when she was still mayor of Wasilla.
I would not blame any candidate for Obama's passport info being breached earlier in the election. There was also a time when a Republican State Department employee was caught searching Bill Clinton's passport records when he was running. I do not lay all these things at the feet of the national party unless I have reason to.
It's politics!
Sadly this is true. Attacking and Counter-Attacking is the way this is run. You get someone that REALLY doesn't do this, and they will lose.
Someone "acts" above it, they better be above it for real. They should only purpose their side of things, and what they plan to do without comparing it to the "lesser" or "weaker" plans of their opponent.
I'll keep watching, and haven't made my choice of who I'm going to vote for yet. I once thought I wasn't going to vote this election, and I guess I could revert back to that, but not likely.
But so far, I am ,over all, unimpressed with Obama. I'm all for whatever, or whoever is best for this country, and he's got a good deal of convincing to do in my eyes. I don't just mean talking "pretty" either.
I just wish it could all be layed out say straight and easy to decipher. What's real is real and what's politics would to striped naked.
Anyway, I actually like Palin so far (how little that is), we'll see how it goes.

Precisely. I couldn't agree more. I really think that Palin represents today's base of the party better than McCain does. That's why her speech was received so well last night by base Repubs. Her job, in that sense, was easier than McCain's will be tonight.
McCain's task is to attract the moderate, undecided voters in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan and a handful of other battleground states. That's where the election is going to be won or lost. He knows that the base of the party won't be enough. He has to distance himself from George W. Bush enough to attract the undecided mods, yet stay close enough to GWB to keep his base fired up.
I'm sure his campaign and speech writers know the tight rope he'll be walking.

a couple of points to add. No one in modern presidential history has won the whitehouse without their base being fired up.
and no one in modern presidential history hsa won the whitehouse without appealing to the independant swing vote.
the winner is the guy who keeps the base fired up and wins the swing vote... in every election.
McCain is and always has been the guy on this ticket who appeals to the swing vote. His main problem was a base that was holding its nose.
Sarah Palin as removed the fingers from the bases nose, and got them to dig into their pocket book. the base now has a dog in this hunt, and McCain is getting them to give bigtime right now.

Right on the money on everything Ferd, but I'd disagree on it being the dems to lose. I believe this election will be very close. 60 days out, I can't see anything but a toss up.
You nailed it with the swing vote. As they go, so goes the election. McCain has to go much farther to the middle and appeal to mod's tonight. McCain's biggest job after Palin last night, is trying to seperate himself from the last 8 years of the Bush administration. If he can do that well enough, he wins. Game over, IMO.
I'm not sure that the best approach was to punk "the boy". In my opinion she should have tried to come across as transcendant, above, and different from the typical politicking. Going on the attack simply invites return fire and I'm just of the opinion that she has too much that can be attacked.
I still haven't had a chance to watch the whole speech, but the parts I did see that were not sarcastic were good.
Coming across as "transcendnant" is a sweet thought but if you don't point out your opponents weaknesses I can gurantee you nobody else is going to do it.
Especially if you are a Republican since the media is in the bag for the Democrats.
Obama tries to give off the aura of being "transcendant" but if you will pay attention to his speeches either right before or right after he disses the "politics of old", yada, yada, yada, he then proceeds to engage in EXACTLT the same behaviour he was deriding five minutes earlier.
I have absolutely no problem with canidates of either party pointing out things about their opponents as long as they are accurate and not personal attacks. Sarah Palin's speech met that criteria.
Jeanie, I'm not disputing the "suggestion that it was a dem", I'm disputing the humongous leap to "suggest that it was the Dems". Like the other examples I gave could come from a Republican, but not necessarily the Republicans.

the second half of that is that when Barak was about that age or slightly younger, he has admitted to being a hard drug user!
The people who are trying to disqualify Palin for her husbands DUI, have never once suggested that Obama HIMSELF is disqualifed for the same if not worse behavior.
Does that mean I think Obama's drug use at that age should disqualify him? Absolutly not. but it does mean that the people who will decide this election for the republicans see this hypocracy. THAT is the point.

I loved it when she pointed out that Obama has authored two memoirs but has not authored a single major piece of legislation.
It is really astonishing how Obama has actually accomplished so little yet has been able to market himself. He is an amazing orator and presence but has virtually no resume. Yet Dems have the audacity to complain about the Republcian VP canidates experience when the guy topping their ticket seeking the actual Presidency is an empty suit.
PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate."
THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

Why would you expect him not to attack her? I think all of that fooey about him having to take it easier on her and not look condescending went out last night. She took a very condesending tone towards Obama. She took the gloves off and landed major blows very well last night.
Sure, Biden has to be congenial to her and not lose his temper, but Sarah Palin isn't going to be treated with kid gloves. She came out very strong last night and they'll answer just as strong I'm sure.

I mean sure the lady can give a great speech, but Joe Biden isn't exactly a chump. He's been grilled time and time again on shows like Meet the Press and others over 30 years. Your guaranteeing that a lady who hasn't even been made available to the national press because they're trying to get her up to speed is going to obliterate him? You're putting a lot of faith in her.
Let me tell you why I've pretty much pulled all my hair out by now. It's like we live in parallel dimensions or a twilight zone during this time the election cycle.
If I talk to a Democrat they act like there was nothing good about the Republican speeches...then when I talk to a Republican they do the same about all the Democrat speeches. When in all actuality I believe that the professional speech writers on both sides are too good for that to actually be the case. I am not afraid to admit that I did hear good things at both conventions and that gives me a framework to honestly discuss the direction I want us to go in.
I see people ridiculing liberals for being so affected by an Obama speech and by words in general...then melt like butter at a Palin speech. The reverse would be true too. Some Dems will say that they were just words but swoon at an Obama speech.

I'm not sure that the best approach was to punk "the boy". In my opinion she should have tried to come across as transcendant, above, and different from the typical politicking. Going on the attack simply invites return fire and I'm just of the opinion that she has too much that can be attacked.

100% agree with you here.
a couple of points to add.
Sarah Palin as removed the fingers from the bases nose, and got them to dig into their pocket book. the base now has a dog in this hunt, and McCain is getting them to give bigtime right now.
having said all that, I still say this race is the dems to lose. McCain can only keep it close and hope ZerObama makes mistakes.
Ferd, I understand that McCain needed to rally the base (or else he would have probably chosen Lieberman). I just think that there are some who would have rallied the base for the same reason, but are not as risky.

Game over, IMO.
you are right on what McCain has to do. that has been his job since he picked Palin.

there is one single over riding factor.
No party has won the white house when the sitting president was from that party and has an approval rating below 50%.... GWBs is in the mid 30's.

I believe in keeping taxes low on everybody (the rich too). I believe in getting taxes lower for businesses because high taxes force manufacturing jobs over seas, increace the cost of goods and services and reduce the number of people a business can employ.
I believe in putting people on the supreme court who will NOT create legislation out of thin air.
I believe that a person should have a right to both join a union and also to keep a job or get a job without being forced to join a union.
I belive in a strong military and that losing in Iraq is a horrible reality that makes America both weaker and more vulnerable to islamic terrorist attack.
I believe that you cannot make the economy stronger by taking money out of the economy and handing it to the government.
I believe that we must drill for oil in America and cut off the middle east.
I believe that the government spends far too much and needs to stop spending like drunken sailors.
I believe that while the cost of healthcare is too high, the fix does not include socializing 1/5 of the American economy.
I do not believe the Republicans have accomplished all or even most of this, but I do know that ONLY the Republicans are the only ones who can do this.
I am pragmatic enought to realize the main reason these things have not gotten done completely since 1980 when the conservitive movement really formed, is because there are enough Americans that DO NOT agree with me at all.
This is the tug of war.
I am also pragmatic enough to believe that some Republicans (and many recently) who either believe these things or have said they do, have flinced and backed down.
while I believe those people need to be replaced, I do not believe you replace them with someone who will work to prevent everything I believe in from happening.

I am a partisian republican because I will NOT vote for someone, or find political value in someone who believes the opposite of what I believe.

I would be willing to support at a grass roots level a third party that does believe these things. but I will NOT vote for a third party for president that has no power base.
third parties need to win at local, and state levels. then gain national power in the house, then in the senate before they have any chance at winning the white house.
and the democrats, and this particular democratic ticket, will NEVER affect the kind of change, or enact the kind of policy that I believe in.
thus I am a partisian Republican. I will not lose to prove a point. I prefer to win and get today what I can, then wait till tomorrow to get more. Losing in politics is not some strange kind of victory.
All the more reason to paint her as the one who is really transcendant and not playing the same games in the same way. Kind of a "change you can actually see on a consistent basis" approach.
Palin had a line last night.
some use change as a carreer builder, others use their carreers to create real change.
McCain is the later.

I'm saying forget about voting for a party. Let's vote for a man or a woman who is pledging to actually do the things that are very important to us. I'm saying that there has to be somebody out there who is qualified and committed to be the kind of leader that we really want, but the old partisanship mindset and the power base that lives off of it is not allowing it. But ultimately it is the American people that are allowing our democratic power to be usurped.
And at the very least, if we are just too locked into the party mindset...for the love of God, make them do something for our votes. Hold them accountable, don't let them take your vote for granted at the end of the day because they have figured out what it takes to insure your vote.

let me say that while I understand what you are saying. I dont agree.
Her job is to win. I dont believe that this being above it all is a winning strategy.
Its nice rhetoric but it doesnt work. we claim to like it but we vote for the guy that cleans the other guys clock.
that is the history of American politics. period.
and Stew, gess what? Barak's rhetoric about a differnet kind of politics isnt new! it is as old as politics bro! In America it is as old as the republic.

and in the greater scope, only republicans meet my standard right now.

Yes, but it is usually more effective from someone who can paint themselves as different in some significant way. As an outsider who has not been tainted by the brand of politics that people are probably more sick of now than at most other times in our nation's history. It worked for Obama due to that and it could have worked for her due to that.
I'm not saying that she had a horrible speech, I'm just saying that I don't think I would have spent my introductory speech to America making jabs aimed to please those who I already have firmly in my pocket.

Ferd, but I know alot of Americans that think like you do and whose standards match yours, and if we all just remain in our partisan sandboxes and not make our vote match the policies we actually want to see...we are all losers.
I don't believe that McCain feels like he has to do what the majority want him to do about immigration and other issues because he knows that 90% of the people on this forum do have a Republican or bust mentality...so what's the point of working for it.

Mike/Stew let me tell you why I am a partisan.
So, I vote for republicans and will work to get rid of bad republicans by replacing them with other republicans.
I am a partisian republican because I will NOT vote for someone, or find political value in someone who believes the opposite of what I believe.
So, call me a partisian. but dont be bewildered when i dont buy it when a democrat talks about change and being different when they clearly believe in exactly the opposite of what I believe and have said as much.
love you guys.
PS, I am also a partisian republican because voting for Bob Barr will get Barak Obama elected.
Ferd, I respect your opinion and I think you know that. I don't question your motives at all. I know you want what's best for the country and that unites you and I.
I simply have had enough of the fiscal liberals that have taken over the Republican party. They've plunged this country in to trillions of dollars of needless debt. While we borrow money from the Chinese, our "friends" the Iraqi's have a $79 billion dollar surplus. It's foolish.
Instead of pre-emptively striking countries that have NOT provoked us(Saddam Hussein hated Bin laden and qaeda), our resources would have been much better spent on finding alternative fuels, and securing our borders.
The party of Lincoln now believes that tapping my phone without a warrant is above board. Forget that quaint document, the Constitution and all my pertaining rights under the law. The Republican party of the last 8 years has also decided that torturing enemy captives is acceptable.
There comes a point when a party simply gets too far off base and a message has to be sent. I've chosen to not blindly support a party who's left it's true north and take a stand on principle.
I'm not condeming or criticizing anyone for not agreeing with me. I just retain the right to vote my principles until someone gets our message.

I didn't say that Baron. It's my understanding that the Bush version of FISA can now tap any phone call solely because I'm receiving it from "a person reasonably believed to be located outside the United States." No mention of supposed terrorists or terrorists watch lists as it was previously. This is all at the discretion of the attorney general and the Director of National Intelligence with the secret court doing nothing but overseeing the methods.
So, if my friend from Ecuador calls, the federal government needs no other reason to eavesdrop on my conversation. Right or wrong?

Not sure if Ecuador is on the list but that seems to be close. As long as the call originates outside the US. If you make the call they can't.

Ok, now I'll defer to you since you're the lawyer, but as I understand it, that is in complete contradiction to my 4th amendment right. What say ye?
Unless it's been amended our 4th amendment right still says:
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Let me just add how the inevitable scene of conservative leaders and radio hosts jumping on the McCain bandwagon after speaking out against his brand of ideaology illustrates the nature of partisanship. You end up having to support someone inspite of your convictions without them having to do much to line up to those convictions.

I think that things evolve and cycles occur.
It is recorded that Palin has taken some tough stands, even against her own party, to oust corruption. Could we vote this ticket and hope this country does evolve into better things?
I don't see the big players on Obama's ticket having the same resume.
After all, not only in our churches, but across the country people are looking to God. I have hopes in this. It can only spill out into the Government.
We can't forget that this world is about the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It's His world and nothing is going unnoticed by Him.

No way! By doing so, I would then be eliminating my 4th amendment rights on modern day technological issues that aren't physical. That would greatly erode my intended 4th amendment rights.
The authors intent is unmistakably clear. It protects all of my "things" from not being clearly described in a warrant and subsequently seized right?
