God understands when one speaks in tongues...
1 Corinthians 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

To understand the purpose of a prayer language(SEE BELOW)

“26 So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.
27 And He Who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the [Holy] Spirit [what His intent is], because the Spirit intercedes and pleads [before God] in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God's will.” Romans 8:26-27 AMP

Interestingly enough, this supernatural phenom described in this portion of 1 Corinthians 14 was private, not hollered so the person next to you can hear you at church, and certainly not screamed on cue by the preacher.

"Thou shalt not commit adultry". Oh, wait a second. Let's go view church history and the orignial Hebrew to see what this means. I'm glad Moses didn't "examine" everything the LORD told him.

I didn't know there was a broken understanding what adultery meant. I didn't realize churches were condemning others, throwing them in the hot place over this non-issue called adultery. Get real.

And while we're at it, this adultery law was a wonderful thing. In fact, the entire Law was a beautiful gift of grace (ironically) from the lawless conditions they had before. It taught them how to live a life fully. It was to be their schoolmaster. It was a beautiful thing. But their sin and rebellion screwed it all up. Adultery when this law was written was 10x more common then it was now. It wasn't a "duh" moment for the Hebrews.

It's in your Bible, you're just blind to the truth. Go read your rainbow edition and dream of men with long hair and shorts.

You are avoiding my question. Could such a person be saved on that desert island? Yes or no? Or do they need an ecclesiastical history book with the bible?I wasn't "avoiding," I was jumping ahead in the dialog. Yes, they could be "saved" - and really saved at that. And they could possess this salvation without a single inclination toward our "Apostolic Distinctives."

Thanks. Of course you would claim their salvation would arrive at the conclusion that Acts 2:38 is not the way. I just wondered how you would see this question in light of your insistence on history to learn reality of historical theology of salvation.

I hate some of these new songs that repeat the same phrase a dozen times, change a word and then repeat another dozen times. Well to me, that's what Standards sounds like!

I wish Standards would work as hard on his "charity" as he does on his dress. And why does he go to the Old Testament to establish a doctrine for today? Standards, if you keep part of it you gotta keep all of it! You can't pick and choose!

Matthew 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

Did the Holy Spirit enter Jesus at this point? If so then how confusing,if the Holy Spirit did not come down on Jesus then why do the scriptures indicate that the Holy Spirit came down on Jesus?

Women shouldn't wear make up and men shouldn't grow beards. I don't watch Hollywood or tv and I refuse to wear gold. I even avoid watches and gold buttons. I don't believe in slits, short skirts, pants on women, shorts on man or woman, costly clothing, and hair dye.

John 1:29-34

The other Gospels give a "You Are There" type of account of the baptism of Jesus, but the Gospel of John takes it from a different angle. Rather than describing the baptism itself, John quotes John the Baptist's account of the baptism after the fact.

It would seem that the passage above takes place as Jesus is returning from the wilderness, so this is something like 40+ days after the baptism and the events surrounding it, the "dove" and all. Seeing it from this angle illuminates a bit more of the scene for us. Also, since John himself was a disciple of John the Baptist it is only natural that this account would be presented in this manner.

To quickly sum up the significance of the "dove" and the "voice" that was heard, from the account in John's Gospel alone one is left with the impression that only John the Baptist saw these signs. Forty or so days later, when he sees Jesus again John then "bares record" and tells his disciples of the events that he had seen and heard when he baptized "that guy right over there!" (To put it colloquially).

The whole "Baptism of Christ" scene and vision appears to have been a sign for John the Baptist alone since he has to reveal this vision to everyone else including his own disciples. Upon hearing the Baptist's account, two of John's disciples (we know one of them is Andrew and the other was probably John, the writer of this account) immediately follow after Jesus and we see a kind of "hand off" of the mantle of ministry from John the Baptist to Jesus Christ.

The appearance of the Holy Spirit then is not some sort of event intended to "anoint" Jesus with the Spirit of God, He already was "God manifest in the flesh." It is an event to mark the man Who was anointed with the Spirit without measure from birth so that John the Baptist would recognize Him for Who He is.

Who even saw this "dove" event?

"And John bare record, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God."

So outward holiness should be rephrased as THE DRESS CODE? SO you would immediatly say I am unholy because I am wearing a golf shirt?? I know where you get scripture for the gold ,pants on women and no cutting hair for women! But where does the long sleeves ,no beards and shorts come from??

Some things are preached as preferences. Beards are not discussed in scripture too much, but the Jews were commanded not to touch their beard.

Leviticus 19:27:Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

Leviticus 21:5:They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

There seems to be an all or nothing approach when it comes to beards in the Bible, therefore, sense we can't look neat with a beard that is never trimmed, we should shave it off.

As for the sleeves, a line has to be drawn somewhere. I don't want people up on our platform with muscle shirts on. If you don't draw the line somewhere, you

No miracles are recorded, God is silent on the issue, I doubt it, but we cannot say.

How can he be exclusively a man apart from God, yet still retain the ability to be "fully God?"

I can't reconcile that. It doesn't make sense. I accept it, but I accept it as a mystery of sorts. If someone is fully a man, they are not Divine at all. Once they are Divine, they cannot be fully a man (never met a human that was Divine yet).

Oneness gets quite complicated. Trinitarian explanations get equally complicated

So if a man shaves his legs he is gay??? O lord my wife will never believe I am gay! I guess I have a confession when I get home!

What is the definition of being gay by the way? Curious.

Funny, Standards (and his ilk) are so hot-headed about homosexuals, but they deny the most masculine God-given feature a man could have: facial hair.

I thought the thread had gone totally goofy.

I agree that both explanations leave areas that cause me to scratch my head. I'm still looking for an explanation that makes it all clear.

By the way, I have a very difficult question for you. Would it be a sin for a woman to shave her face? Scripture? Why did God put a beard on a man if He didn't want it to be there? And I also ask, where does the Bible say we men must "be neat?"

I take that back, when I say "long," down to the knees is too long to me. But I've seen it look really good on some. A few of my Filipino friends have hair to their knee caps. Trimmed, straight and LOOOONG. Looks great on them.

I wonder if Standards overseer, superintendent, chairman..... whoever is keeping an eye on him, (and boy I hope there is someone doing that), knows that he has a computer that has the capability of viewing so much more ungodly stuff than the TV has ever been capable of doing?

Standard, you better do as allstate said, and "shun the very appearance of evil." Get rid of that evil computer and get your nose in the Bible. (And make sure it's the King James Version.)

In fact as holy as you are you shouldn't even look at the JC Pennys catalog because it has pictures of girls in skimpy underwear, (I think), and you might be tempted to lust. Just saying.....

"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes". I would say that looking at your shaved legs would be a sin. At least, it should be. It's just downright g...i mean, unmanly.

A teenager? Hahaha. That's rich.A grumpy old man, then? :grampa

Coming on AFF with no view to discuss the scriptures but to rail on others is immature. You've only alienated those who don't believe like you even further from what you think is the truth and cemented the caricature they have of conservatives in their minds. IOW, you've done more damage than good.

Not in my books. My opinion alone, though.... and my wife's. ;) (NO, I did not want to at one time, either). lo

It's gay-like, not full-fledged gaity. Not every man with a prissy voice is homosexual either, but it grates on me still. :vomit

I'm an avid cyclist. For over 20 years I've ridden with men who shave their legs and I've never met one Gay rider. The mainstay of professional cyclists' shave their legs. Go ahead, go up to Lance Armstrong and call him Gay, to his face. You may find out he won't like that.

I get what Mike is saying though.

Not all leg shavers are gay/effeminant, nor are all leg shavers athletes (cyclists, swimmers, etc)

I'm sure I can find a UFC champ that wears silks to bed, shapes his eyebrows regularly, has a monthly pedi and wears cover-up. It's still generally regarded as quote effeminant.

Heck, Dennis Rodman dressed in drag. I wouldn't confront him either! But I will safely, behind my computer, definitely say that was rather feminine and queer.

I am happy with the one I've got, thank you. Just go back to looking through your JC Penny's catalog
