I said "I don't think they could use that as an excuse" meaning that if they were predisposed to use that as an excuse I don't think they could legitimately do so.( I don't know if they were or not, although I do remember some excuses being made back then...not by them but some of the OP's I knew.)

Here is the question once more:

Did you also hear the unedited version? I did. They, cleverly cut out what they did not want aired on t.v.. The bias was so glaring in the editing that it could not be missed.

When Marvin Hicks debated Dan Billingsley in Dallas, I attended (I was just a kid then) and some of that debate (it's on my IPod) I remember. All of these debates are filled with snide remarks and retorts which makes for a very interesting listen. What would have made them even more flammable would have been a cross examination section, but as it were they just gave 30 minute speeches.

Does anyone else have any memories of that time when the UPC was a little bit more militant?? Seems to me that after the Ankerberg debate the UPC went into a shell, except the occasional David Bernard debate (i.e. the one he did with Gene Cook, which I thought David Bernard won).

Any thoughts??
Sabin debated after the Ankerburg debates too. Bernard also debated a University Professor of Theology sometime after the Cook debate. I have it....it was interesting to constantly hear the Trinitarian say they were separate persons and even separate beings.....from a Professor no less. But it was a very civil discussion

That wasn't even a debate. I don't know what RS was thinking but he did not bother to defend Oneness or Attack trinity...instead he told a story about Michael Servetus being burned alive at the stake by Calvinists....

BTW the Ankerburg video WAS indeed edited. a LOT of the content was edited out and to make OPs look bad and them look good.

I have a set of vhs tapes of the debate. I do not know, however, if it is edited or not. I haven't watched them in a long time. If the tapes I have are not edited...then I have to disagree with your assessment of the unedited version.

He would have frustrated them...because he would have consistently exposed their logical fallacies. It would have been hilarious, though, to watch him rip them to shreds, the UPC and the COC.

Old thread, I know. Bro. Marvin Hicks passed away just a few weeks ago, late December of 2014. He will be remembered for his outstanding knowledge of scripture and his willingness, always, to contend for the faith as he understood it. His understanding of the word of God was legendary. There is at least one minister I know of who initially was Church of Christ but after hearing Bro. Hicks debate, began searching the scripture and found the beauty of the truth of the mighty God in Christ.

Although he, like many debaters, knew how to gouge the opposition (this was usually done by both sides in many of these debates), he was known for his humility and kindness.

I will miss Bro. Hicks; his desire to share the word was exemplary. Until shortly before his death he pastored an independent Apostolic church in Ragley, Louisiana.

Enjoyed Hicks he would fill buildings in his debates. He made it fun.

I attended the Hicks/Billingsley (Sherman), Hicks/Hill (Dallas, Hicks/Ramsey (Garland) in the early 70's. They were entertaining, but I grew to dislike them very much.
