Pub Night Event

A church in DC is hosting a pub night.

What do you think?

I see nothing wrong with it. A church can meet, discuss Scripture, in the presence of the lost. Surely, it will generate some very interesting conversations. Meeting in a pub isn't that much different from meeting in Applebee's where the bar is open.

I've often met with fellow believers in resturants, coffee shops, etc. Often people in the establishment over hear the conversation and occasionally they will chime in and join the conversation. It's amazing how God moves when we get Him out of our RELIGIOUS box.

Jeeesh.

I will check. Would you like an invite?

"At this month's pub night we'll take our topic from our Friday afternoon luncheon series on the Hill, Christianity and Politics 101. We'll introduce the concept of the Christian's dual citizenship in the two kingdoms, and discuss its practical ramifications for public policy.

Pub Night is all about discussing interesting topics of the Christian faith with friends, in a relaxed social setting. It is open to all and you are strongly encouraged to bring a friend from outside our immediate circle who has an interesting perspective to share."

Naw. To me going to a strip club is like going to Dairy Queen and just looking at banana splits.

That's funny. My wife wouldn't mind if I was at DQ looking at banana splits though...

I think they are meeting there to drink and discuss politics and religion.

I'm not sure I get your parallel between a strip club and a pub... but ooookay.

It's funny, though. Hey, my new Band Director brews his own beer. Am I in trouble?

Hey that's like AFF only you don't have to drink alone.

I think this is a great idea. I want to organize one soon. I wonder if my church will pick up the tab?

I always thought that was Buzz Beer. "And the best part about Buzz beer, is that you never have to drink alone."

Both are considered dens of iniquity by most traditional Oneness Pentecostals. Places with alcohol, drunkeness, and women with not enough clothes on!

I don't think that applies to just "Oneness Pentecostals".

A strip club I can follow.

A pub, especially depending where you live, are like coffee houses and cafes: places where people meet, socialize, have a meal, a brew, etc... Not sure the rest of that follows in all situations (half-naked women and drunks). In either case, however the women are dressed, and however many drunkards are around, what a wonderful time/place to bring the Gospel. People predispositioned to alcholism, struggling alcoholics, etc need not apply. Be wise. Same thing for people with severe gambling addictions, or they sense it can be an issue. Don't even have dinner at a casino. Don't even go there. Flee it!

I think it's a wonderful idea and a great opportunity to bring the Gospel in a context not done too often these days.

I couldn't say the same if they were meeting in a strip club, night club, etc... But this venue is almost... perfect.

Well Pubs in DC aren't exactly radical places for the most part. Usually more suits than anything. There was one over by the ACLJ that had 25 cent wings on Tuesdays...woohoo

Sounds interesting. I've never been... do they card people on their way through the door, or is it more like a very upscale Applebee's--except with much better food and ambiance?

I know what you mean. We have several "Pub / Brewery / Restaurants" in our area that are just like eating at a Chilis, Applebees, or any other restaurant serving alcohol.

However a lot of true pubs are 98% for drinking and serve very limited menus of food. Usually not very good and they are not considered places to eat as much as places to drink. That is what I was thinking about when I posted.

Even those places are meeting centers. In the Northeast, Northwest, etc it's very common for people to talk theology over a beer. These aren't drunkards. It's very cultural. CC1, I think there are some misconceptions about the people who attend bars (like that they are all getting drunks). Most assuredly, there will be some there getting drunk or acting like drunkards. But that's usually pretty controlled, and more apt for post-happy hour, late-night stuff than prime-time, or afternoon meet and chat environment.

Re: Pub Night Event

Are we really worrying about this??? We have a church gathering where the lost congregate to discuss faith and politics (sure conversation starters in any bar or pub). Most of the people they talk to will be out for a good time, maybe a little buz, but not to get "drunk". I'm all for it. I've personally seen how coffee shop conversations can be so provocative that those sitting adjacent chime in or ask if you're with a church. It's easy to draw people into a very deep and moving conversation about the Lord in public places. Odds are these lost people aren't going to get dressed up on Sunday morning and "go to church" I'm blessed to see the church... going to the lost. Sitting with them in a public venue. Being civil, open, non-judgmental, just sharing the good news about Jesus.

We need more of this. A bar and grill, resturant that has a bar, a pub, or any other such public venue is just fine...especially if the saints are going as a group.

When will we stop being afraid to get dirty??? It seems like too many of us hike up our dresses and scream "Ewwww!" when it comes to GOING to where the lost are located. I love witnessing downtown, right outside the bar scene and the red light district. Where else you going to share the Gospel with a prostitute or exotic dancer? I've been on trips where we've helped a guy so drunk he didn't know where his car was. So we called him a cab. The church is getting active and getting it's hands dirty. I love it! lol

Is this a disclaimer just in case we catch you in the red light district, Aquila? :heeheehee

I chimed in on this on another forum where a minister argued the subject "Go where the wreckage is." His particular church was sending people into strip clubs to "go to the wreckage." I took issue with the wisdom it all... the fact is, a prostitute is not who they are. It's what they do for a few hours of their day. It's an occupation. (Stripper, etc). They live somewhere. They go grocery shopping somewhere. They are someone's neighbor. The person sharing a laundry mat. There are so many ways to reach people than to visit them in those couple of hours when they are working. This group said the husband's wait in the car and prayed for the women. I just kept shaking my head. Get any red-blooded man in a stripper parking lot and you've stirred imaginations. It all sounded goofy, and was drive-by evangelism. Build relationship with them, and one that doesn't center (or support) the degrading occupation they are trapped in.

There are no rules for this. But a good kick in the butt of wisdom would be helpful for folks sometimes.

And to the author of that post, I reminded him that we are ALL "the wreckage."
