This kind of stuff just doesn’t happen to us

For those on facebook that are connected to Mrs. Ferd (you know who you are), you have already seen this.

But for others here, I thought I would share.

About a year ago, while returning from a Drs. Visit with our youngest son my wife stopped at a kids store. While there a lady stopped and asked about Jack. He was hooked up to a heart monitor at the time. They talked for a while as this lady has a child with serious medical issues as well.

Long story short the lady told Mrs. Ferd about an organization called A Wish with Wings. We sat on the information for a year but earlier this year, Mrs. Ferd made contact. After filling out some paperwork and submitting Drs. reports, they called us and wanted to meet Jack. They had asked in the paperwork if there was some vacation that would be special to Jack and we thought Sea World would be nice. It’s only a few hours away by car and not a big trip albeit out of our budget considering the medical bills we collect.

Well, after spending some time with these wonderful people they suggested a trip to Disney World! We were shocked. Honestly I thought this would be a long drown out process of meeting us, discussing it and then making a decision. Instead of that, we spent an hour with them and the end result is an all expenses paid trip to Orlando. We will fly there, they pay for a rental car, take care of car seats for the boys and all the other needs we have related to Jack etc.

We will be staying at a place called One World Village. This is on the Disney World property and is itself a 70 acre villa with its own water part and other amenities. Our food is paid for, our gas money is taken care of, we will have passes to all the Disney theme parks, plus passes to Kennedy Space Center, and Lego Land. There are tons of other things we could do but simply cannot fit into the week that we will be there. We met with them on Tuesday, the trip was booked on Wednesday!

It is truly a trip of a lifetime. It is something we could never give Jack ourselves. God has blessed us. These wonderful people at A Wish with Wings have blessed us. It has been a long journey with Jack and we have more to come but God is always there pointing the way and letting us know he has not forgotten.

We also had a checkup with Jacks Dr. It was the first “good” report we have had in a while. Last year his thyroid levels started creeping up. At that time, the Dr was pretty sure we would be doing surgery this year. Due to the physiology of Jacks heart, he was preparing us for a pacemaker. You can imagine what it means to have a 4 year old on a pacemaker for the rest of his life…

It seems the thyroid levels have leveled off and are back in normal range, so we can put of surgery for another year. The Dr. is pleased and seems to believe another year will give us the growth we need to see to avoid the pacemaker.

I know a lot of you guys have been with us from the beginning and have prayed a lot of prayers for Jack. It is much appreciated and a real comfort to us. Jack is an active little guy and you would never know he had the first problem just looking at him. We truly are blessed!

This is marvelous news Ferd, I didn't know anything about your son having a heart condition, but I am rejoicing with you today over this blessing in your lives!

I was just today thinking of a song written by one of the sweetest pastors I ever had, Bro. Don Johnson wrote this song called "I Can't Complain" .

No matter what situations life bring us, isn't it wonderful to walk with Jesus, and even though there are "hard days and sad days" .... I still can't complain!

Praising Jesus with you!!!

I haven't heard of this org but it sounds identical to Make A Wish. Congrats!

Isn't it amazing how efficient private organizations are that do these types of things! Just imagine if the Feds had a program which attempted to duplicate it and the nightmare both in paperwork and costs that would be involved.

Wow!

He not only provides for us he gives us the desires of our hearts too - - and this time you didn't really even know you desired a Disney vacation!

How awesome!!

God directs our paths!! That meeting at the kids store was designed by God.

Ferdinand,

Take plenty of video's. We took our kids to Disneyland back when our daughter was 5 and watching videos of the trip helped keep it in her memory very vividly.

Ferd, I know that you are already aware that Mrs. Ferd and I have been talking about this on FB. I am sooooo happy for your family! This is truly going to be the vacation of a lifetime for all of you! My niece got to go to Disney/Give Kids The World through Make A Wish several years ago. You have NO idea all the wonderful things that go along with this trip - more surprises than we could even begin to share with you., And I wouldn't tell you everything just because I wouldn't ruin the surprise for you and Mrs. Ferd, as well as your kiddos. Just know, that by the end of this trip, you will have been treated better than you have EVER been treated in your entire lifetime. And you will be humbled more than you can even imagine - all from the kindness of complete strangers. You are gonna LOVE it!

And by the way, do take the videos. But just FYI, my sister told me that if you don't take a video camera with you, it's ok. Because they have them there to loan to you for the whole time you are there. And then before you come home, they will transfer all those videos to DVD for you.

LOL! yes this is very much like Make a Wish. I think on a smaller scale, although Wish with Wings has helped 1100+ kids over 30 years or so.

and I refuse to think about the feds getting involved in something like this!

Re: This kind of stuff just doesn’t happen to us

Ferdinand,

As far as the video thing goes if you want to travel light there are a lot of compact still cameras today that take great high def video. For our trip to Europe I decided to leave the dedicated video camera at home at took the videos with my Canon SX230HS. Not as good video as a good dedicated video camera but plenty good for a family vacation and so cool not to be burdened down with a big camera. This Canon fit in my pocket and shot 1080p HD and had zoom and autofocus that work in the video function. Oh, and it took great still pics also.

Ferd, I would disagree with CC1's advice a bit. You need to take hundreds of hours of high quality HD video -after all, this video will be watched for the rest of your life!

I suggest one of these:

For that real extra professional feel, you also need it to be stabilized while carrying.

This is awesome, Ferd!

You may already have it covered, but if you'd like to borrow a very portable HD video camera for your trip, let me know. I have one that shoots great videos on an SD card and isn't being used much right now. I'm in Dallas, so we could meet up. Just let me know.

We have a nice HD video camera that is pretty small... and Mrs Ferd is addicted to her camera so we will have plenty of this stuff...

on another note, one of the "perks" is they give you a card when you get there, then when you walk around Disney, any time you see one of the disney photograpers, you just give them your card. they put it in their camera and take your picture then give it back.

at the end of the trip you get your photos plus you get a CD with them all loaded!

im ignoring Randy

One bit of advice: pace yourselves. Trying to cram too much into one week, especially in the summer, will turn fun into unfun real fast. ;)

yea. Mrs. Ferd and I have been talking about that. it will be impossible to do everything so we are just going to hit the highlights.

The BIGGEST deal will actually be going to Kennedy Space Center. Jack LOVES rockets so that will be number 1 on the list. Disney will fall in after that.

RW, I know the value of high quality HD video as we do Wedding and Event Videography. I have two Sony V1U 3 chip high def cameras that do a great job. However the advances that have been made are incredible. My little Canon SX230HS does video in 1080p HD at 30fps. The quality is amazingly good.

Oh, and we actually do have a Glidecam 4000HD and Flycam arm and vest stabilizer similar to your pic that we use in the Wedding Videography biz!

Awesome! We were in Orlando for the first time last September (just my wife and myself) but we went to Universal instead of Disney, saving Disney for when our granddaughters are a little older and we can take them. I have been to Disneyland in CA a bunch of times though and Disney parks are great.

Bishop, the great thing about going with an organization like Ferd's family is with is that they will have a tag to wear and they won't have to wait in any lines at all! To the front of the line they will go every single time! Cool, eh?

Ferd, one thing my sister said to tell you is that it is very possible that you might even want to plan one day where you don't even leave Give Kids the World because there are soooooooooooooo many things to do right there! Check it out. See what you think.

I am so, so happy that you are getting to do this. It has seriously been the highlight of Cara's whole life so far. I'm thinking it will be the same for your boys and all your family. Have a GREAT time.

Ferd, this is exciting news for y'all. To be honest, reading your post was as if I was listening to one of those stories a caller calls into the local radio station around Christmastime, tells of a very trying situation or an unfortunate circumstance, and gets told they're going on a special vacation.

Y'all have fun and be safe!

(BTW, I owe you a text just to say "hey, hope all's well. Consider this that text. :) )

We use a FLIP. :)

Actually my Canon 60d takes amazing video but I have yet to do anything serious with it in that way. The FLIP is just so darn convenient.

And I didn't know you did Wedding and event video taping. What would you recommend for good video editing software? (Keeping in mind that I do NOT use a Mac.... I use a real computer.)

We use Sony Vegas Pro 11. Amazing software for around $600. Like all software it has its glitches but it is still very powerful. There is a scaled back home version for around $100.

Well, I paid a grand for my copy of Adobe Photoshop CS5, so $600 doesn't shock me too much (although it would shock my wife so I will have to try the home version).
