Let's talk about modesty
What does modesty mean to you?
Is it just about covering your privates with clothing? Is it about how flashy and/or expensive your clothing and accessories are? Is it about how loud and attention-grabbing you choose to be? Is of about choosing discretion in your speech and behavior? Is it about not bragging? Is it about not having a proud and haughty spirit? I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this subject! |
Re: Let's talk about modesty
My short answer when it comes to clothing, modesty is covering up body parts that will catch attention with clothing that wont catch attention. My short answer for modest speech, modesty is not bragging about how modest you are.

My wife grew up on a farm and in the Assembly's of God church and shows far more modesty and fruits of the spirit then almost ALL PENTE-COSTAL young people I have ever known. My respect for the jean skirt wearing, hair down to the butt, "all hang around the 'cool pastors kids' cliks" is completely nil. |

Kids knew at an early age how to play the game.

mod·est (mdst)
adj. 1. Having or showing a moderate estimation of one's own talents, abilities, and value. 2. Having or proceeding from a disinclination to call attention to oneself; retiring or diffident. 3. Observing conventional proprieties in speech, behavior, or dress. 4. Free from showiness or ostentation; unpretentious. 5. Moderate or limited in size, quantity, or range; not extreme |
Re: Let's talk about modesty
I believe that Pentecostals can dress very modest and still look good. They don't have to be plain and dowdy to be modest.
I detest this causual dress that is coming into the church. I believe we should give God our best and look our best. |

My wife and I dress very modest and we dress nice. We dodn't look like we got up out of the yard from doing yard work and went to church. Our clothing is modest and nice and neat. |

I would not go to a church where they dressed imodest (didn't follow holiness standards) or they dress sloppy for church. I wasn't raised that way. I dress better to go to walmart than some do to go to God's house and that is a shame. |

Do you put on your best clothing (suit, tie, dress shoes) right before you kneel down and talk to God at home? A church building (what you deem the house of God) is no more special than a quiet place in the corner of a darkened alley or in the comfort of your home. ...i'll tell you what i'm ashamed of....people who limit God's power to one specific group of people and a specific place of worship. God is bigger than that....at least mine is anyway. |

Re: Let's talk about modesty
I have always hated wearing suits. The only times I ever have was when I was doing weddings. It reminds me of slick politicians or salesman.

Re: Let's talk about modesty
I'd rather walk into a pentecostal service dressed like a bum to make the less fortunate ppl who can't afford nice clothes feel welcome and not out of place, than to wear nice clothes and receive compliments and praise. No matter what your pastor says or how you were brought up...Church is the body of Christ...not a sam hill building...and gathering in a building with others who are in the body of Christ isn't a fashion show. Put your cameras away, get off your phones and stop tweetin the gossip, and start tweetin your mouths to Jesus with praise. He didn't die on that old rugged cross so that His people could condemn others for what they wear...He died so that we might have life. Life is in the blood...not in a big piece of cloth...or silk.

Re: Let's talk about modesty
Our best isn't always the same. So we can't judge those that don't measure up to our best. We were poor growing up, some of our clothes were hand made, others from Goodwill. But, we were clean. Yes, we had SOME people in our church that made fun of us, or looked down on us. But, my Mother was a woman of great faith, she was hurt by some. But, it didn't deter her from going to church. Every once in a while we got something I considered fancy, or new. Cheap but new.

Steve Pixler has some great thoughts about Modesty on his blog. I think his posts have been compiled into book form now...but the original articles are still up.
