For Wandy Rayne
Randy,
I watched a "prepper" show here a while back. Some of those people are nuts! But anyway, I've decided I must be a mild form of prepper. I am not waiting for a cataclysmic earthquake or anything like that but, given the financial system, and looking forward to the uncertain future of all things financial, I guess I try to be a bit of a financial prepper in my own way. The first way that that comes out is in my husband and I trying to build a couple of businesses. We find the working world to be very demanding and stressful and it would be nice to work for ourselves as long as the income is there. And it looks like it can be if we do this right. There is no true SAFE route......only safer or less safe ones. So, what are your preppeing inclincations and why? And for the rest of you, what are you doing to prepare for the future? Anything? Are you just doing 401K and hoping for the best? Or anything else? |
Re: For Randy Wayne
We watch Doomsday Preppers every week, even though the majority of people now featured are, shall we say, on the wacky side. Did you catch the last episode featuring Hawaii Guy? Before that was the infamous "Greta" episode where the lady of the house (a typical hippie type) constantly spoke to Greta who was warning her of the massive coming tidal waves! Most fans of the show agree that one or both of these episodes represents the shows "jumping the shark" moment(s).

Re: For Randy Wayne
We believe it is always good to be prepared for the unknown. We have prepared some food storage. And because we live in an area with abundant sources of water, we really don't need to worry about storing water.
It is hard to know what to plan for, when it is the unknown. That is why I believe trusting in the Lord is also a very important part of planning for the future, and listening to his voice, and trusting Him to tell us what to prepare. We have a friend who recently bought a large amount of wheat, and a wheat grinder, because the Lord impressed him to do it. So, who knows what lies ahead, although we do know that the financial situation of our country is in a shambles, and it would behoove us all to at least have several weeks worth of food in case of a national emergency of any kind. |
Re: For Randy Wayne
Sprinkled throughout are some real people with genuinely good idea's for being prepared. One family happens to live just a few miles from us in Tempe and was featured on season 1. They converted their outdoor swimming pool into a Tilapia pond and between a garden, small flock of chickens, and the fish, can literally provide for 98-99% of their own food, all from a very small backyard.

Of course besides food I am also stock piling things like ammo (and guns), rechargeable batteries and a couple of solar panels capable of charging them, several walkie talkies as well as a small HAM radio, and MANY ways of starting fires. |

It is VERY hard to have a garden here in the north. You need a greenhouse. I hope to get one for this summer. I did put up a LOT of vegetables last summer that we bought at a local produce stand for next to nothing. Makes me wonder if gardening here is worth all the trouble, when I can get such great veggies down the street and can them. Have you ever tried dehydrating? I was listening to a lady speak about the fact that with dehydration that you keep about 80% of the nutrients, while in canning, you lose about 80% of the nutrients! It is just that dehydrating is so time consuming, which is why we haven't tried it. |
