"Hello, this is Evangelist..." : Do you let them come preach?

I confess that I saw a thread similar to this on another forum and thought I'd like to see the responses to the question from some of the AFF crowd.

Every Pastor I know has, at some time or another, had a telephone ring only to answer it and hear, "Hello! I know you may not know me but I'm Evangelist (Insert name here) and I just wanted you to know that I'm in the area with some time off and wanted to know if I could come preach for you while I'm in the area?"

QUESTION: Do you let them come or do you generally turn them down?

QUESTION: What is your philosophy of dealing with those calling wanting to preach for you?

QUESTION: Have you ever been 'burned' by someone and wished you hadn't let them come?

This ought to be interesting and I'll hold my viewpoints for a little while to see what others think...

Let's hear your answers!

When my dad evangelized he would have references that he would share.

He would also do back ground interest checks on the pastor as well.

He got put into some crazy situations by not knowing who he was going to preach for.

I think the I'm in the area call does not happen as much anymore...

If I know a Pastor and trust his judgment I always leave that door open for the Pastor to call me and say, "I have this Evangelist that I think would help your Church."

However, I have never... in all my years of Pastoring... had an Evangelist who called me up and said, "My name is *** and can I come preach for you?" ever come preach for me. Never.

Now, mind you, there are a few that I've heard or had recommended to me and told them, "If you're in the area give me a call." I mean that. However, a pretty sure way to never preach for me is to call me, introduce yourself and ask to come preach.

You think that's too hard? Then you've never been burned bad enough! I used to feel different but had a 'struggling Evangelist' call me and put me on a guilt trip. I used him... and he used me. Ended up trying to sell a bunch of stuff to my folks, calling them on the side without my knowledge, pressuring them into purchases of things they didn't even need.

Serious? Absolutely... he sold a DIET kit to a woman that weighed 90 pounds!

And, yes, it's the truth!

Seriously, the whole process needs to be re-vamped, in reality it comes down to the I know so and so, very intimidating for the God called, shy evanglist that has a call and anointing but has no clue about the process because no one has shown them how.

There are two opposite spectrums ends, the camp/philosophy that tells you if your called God will open doors, no calls, no networking , just pray and wait. You wait and wait, go to conferences, watch all the carnal preachers kids that you saw in Bible College fornicate and fool around, while you studied, prayed and was obedient get meetings, churches and promoted by their buddies.
(Boy keith you sound bitter, well I once was, but India took it all away)

The other end are the self promoters with their neat little Outreach.com promotions that have no idea of a gift making room for you.

I think somewhere in the middle is where it should be.

And to this we agree... that has to be a better way to network good Evangelists into Churches. I'm of the opinion that the greatest Evangelists out there are hidden and have yet to be heard.

I know my dad would go to General Conference. Because it was in Sept/Oct he would fill his entire schedule up for the next year.

The nice thing about the GC was he could find men from the same area of the country and set travel times up to be with churches in the same general area.

It saved travel costs...

He also after a few years had regular standing invites year after year.

I understand your postion.

I would be nervous as a pastor....

I'm not a pastor so my opinion matters little, bit the Bible says to know them that labor among you...

I'd be careful who I let address my sheep. Especially the young in the Lord.

Absolutely. I would be asking them who I might call for a reference, or who would I know that they know.

However, if an evangelist did come and preach something contrary to the church's teaching, I would hope the Pastor would get up and say that is enough and do a sermon of his own.
