If you're not aware, "Timmy" is a poster on AFF that describes himself as an "Agnostic" or a "Deist" with leanings toward being a "Deist." He comes from a pentecostal background.
I like Timmy. He's kind, gentle, understanding, non-confrontational, knows the bible very well, dependable, and consistent. Recently, I had a personal crisis that could have been devastating, and Timmy was one of the first I contacted. I didn't ask him to pray but I said, "If you ever would, I could sure use it." I trust him.
He also has a great understanding of the church and how it operates. He sees the power of community and has some great perspectives of the redemptive potential of the church. I haven't asked what he does for a living but I get the impression his business sense is very good.
So I once told Timmy I wish he lived here in my area and would love to have him in our church (we openly embrace those who don't wear the label of "Christian") and if he did I'd have him on our church board.
I mentioned it in another thread today and that idea didn't exactly go over very well.
So....what do you think. Would you have him on your church board considering the qualities I mentioned?
Nah, his user info lists one of his favorite activities as "beer"... unless it changed recently.
Sorry... ahem...
Timmy has some very good qualities, you are right. However, I have very little idea of what he actually believes or would be comfortable with, so I would refrain until I knew him better on that level.

I've never met him in person and there are some things I don't know. So yeah, I'd need to know him "better." I agree. But I'm saying, based on what I know....

I have only read the first page of this thread but let me see if I understand you correctly. You don't know Timmy well enough to let him speak at your church but you would put him on your church board?
Between this thread and the one where you detail how you throw together your sermons Sunday mornings I am thankful I don't go to your church!

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

There are various roles that various churches ask a "Board" to fill. In ours, it's about the financial operations of the church, budget, employment, IRS compliance, etc. I would welcome Timmy's expertise in that area.
Speaking to the church and offering spiritual enrichment? That wouldn't something he would do and I don't think he would want to.
But if you're serious about me "throwing together sermons", that seriously hurts and I can honestly say that I've never been actually "hurt" by anything someone has said to me here (and I've been name-called to death).
I hope you don't mean that and are attempting to be funny. If you're serious......well, that would hurt.
