We can cut loose and go way overboard with things, and the bible even says this! The genuine Spirit of God can move upon someone to give a message in tongues, and yet we require some wisdom in how to handle it.
1Co 14:27-31 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. (28) But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. (29) Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. (30) If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. (31) For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
Replace tongues in that passage with anything the Spirit is doing.
If we are not meant to take some responsibility for the way we act "in the Spirit", then why did Paul say the spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet, and to curb ourselves and ensure we do things in order? Some people honestly think that if they feel to do it, then they could care less when and how, and simply let it rip all out of order and good conduct.
I am not being disrespectful, but too many Spirit filled believers are lacking much in this very issue. Why would Paul tell people to curb themselves when a genuine unction of the Spirit moves upon them to speak in tongues, if there were not some responsibility from ourselves required?
Paul actually had to tell the people that it is error to say they cannot help themselves, when he told them the spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet.
1Co 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
1 Cor 14 also says that if the sinner comes in and sees disorder of speaking in tongues across the place, with no interpretations, they will think we're all mad. And Paul said they think it quite rightly! Such things are not tolerable before unbelievers.
1Co 14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
And even in the case where unbelievers are not present, Paul still said he'd rather prophesy in the native tongue and benefit someone else, than simply enjoy personal blessing by speaking in tongues.
1Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
1Co 14:16-17 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? (17) For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
I am afraid too many are ignorant of
1 Cor 14's teaching, and act like a bunch of unrestrained, spiritually immature "Corinthians", sad to say. People would rather get personal blessings in an immature spiritual state of being, rather than be used by God to bless others.
1Co 14:24-25 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: (25) And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
Unfortunately, many see this revelry of unrestrained immaturity and cast away anything similar.
2Pe 2:2b ...by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
Imagine if these folks instead operated in genuine miracles and gifts that caused the unbelievers to cry out that God is real?!
