A 20 year old man was sentenced to 16 years probation and ordered to pay child support for raping a 14 year old, now he wants visitation rights. amazing gall.

Re: Rapist Wants Visitation Rights
This just infuriates me! Why 16 years PROBATION for violating a 14 year old girl?!?! What's to keep him from violating another child? Just the "threat" of jail time if he violates probation!? Ridiculous! Did he get probation JUST so he could create income and provide child support?

This very well may be the case.
As for the rapist, if he wanted to raise a child he should have found a consenting individual, married them like a responsible adult and had children. I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. And yes he should be in prison, and forced to work from the prison with his entire pay going to the child until the child turns 18, then he should be released.

Re: Rapist Wants Visitation Rights
The sentencing reflects the judge's conviction that this was probably not rape in the usual sense of the word.
I also believe this was consensual and believe that the father should have visitation rights.

The article is weird. It keeps referring to him as a rapist, the girl says he raped her, but the charges were for statutory rape.
Yeah, he gets visitation rights.

I noticed that too but I was wondering because I read somewhere that the charge of statutory rape doesn't always mean that there was consent, it just means the individual was under age, it could be consensual or not. Could be wrong.

Re: Rapist Wants Visitation Rights
If there had been evidence for forcible rape the sentence would have been prison. In most states a 14 year old can not consent to have sex with someone over 18, so parents or even the state can pick up charges. Yet plenty of 14 year olds are sexually mature or even promiscuous, do not announce that they are underage, and are not readily identifiable as under age by looks or body type.
I can see visitation for the father who ultimately may wind up being a better influence on the child than the mother, depending on where they both go from here. I don't believe it is ever a good idea to cut a parent from a child's life that is capable of being involved in a healthy way no matter their other issues.
We already have over a half million kids in the foster/adoption system being raised without parents and their outcomes are not usually as good as even those with marginal parents.
