It's unfortunate, at the very least. However, it's important to not allow that picture to cause an unnecessarily extreme reaction toward breastfeeding (including public) as a whole. TIME was being shocking on purpose. Most nursing mothers aren't shocking at all. They're just feeding their babies.
Bro Tenney told me the story of him and Tommy Craft preaching in Africa. The men were inside while the women were outside listening. After the preaching Tenney stayed inside to pray with the men while Craft went outside to pray w the women. He said Craft came back in red faced and told Tenney to look outside. There he said was a woman weeping and worshipping and praying, bare chested and a toddler suckling. So God can move even on a bare chested woman. However, we will discourage it during our services...

I nursed one of my babies at the ball park. When they are hungry they need to eat. Most people were not shocked, and they sure didn't have the nerve to say anything. I just covered up, it's not that hard. And it's so much more inexpensive than formula. Of course moms have to watch what they eat, and they need to drink a lot of water.

Not unless you want to be up with a crying baby.

Peppers never bothered my babies. Dairy did...made me very glad I was nursing at the time instead of trying to find a dairy free formula. My experience avoiding dairy was much less stressful than the struggle to find the right formula I've seen friends go through.

When our youngest child was a baby -- might say a very young toddler, I guess -- his big brothers thought they'd have some fun, and gave him a tiny taste of some very hot hot sauce. He recoiled, made the cute face you'd expect, scrunched up, etc. But then: he wanted more! He loved the stuff!

Do you have any reasoning or scientific evidence for why breast feeding should cease at this point?

Because the American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization would both disagree with you.

And if Moses' mother would have weaned him at that point, I can guarantee he wouldn't have remembered all she taught him about God.

It did my oldest daughter, big time. Now she LOVES spicy stuff. I just didn't eat it with the others, but they all pretty much like spicy food too. I really hated giving up caffeinated coffee, though.
