Re: Thoughts On The Paranormal
How do u explain to me , a person that had no church background as a child, how I knew that something "evil" was present? I never had a problem going down into basements...anywhere, till we moved to a house in Michigan. I had not preconcieved anything to be afraid to go down stairs. In fact while we were moving in, I did not feel anything. But one day while alone, going to the pantry area, I will not forget, ever, how I felt an evil standing right behind me. I didn't even know about such stuff. Yes, it could have been a evil spirt demon, I have no clue...in my child like mind it was a bad person buried there.
Other scriptures:
Dt 2:10-12; Job 7:11-16; Ps88:9-12; Prv 21:16; Isa 14:7-10; Isa 26:11-15; Isa 29:1-4; Dan 5:10-12; Dan 7:28; Hosea 12:1-5; Lev 26:21,22; 1Sam 12:20-22; 1Sam 28:8; Matt14:24-26; Matt 23:37-39; Lk 24:36-41; Rev 18:1-8
I like reading from the Message bible.

Re: Thoughts On The Paranormal
So... what are some theories on "ghosts"?
Right now I'm leaning on an theory based on the trichotomy of man. Perhaps when an unsaved person dies, they experience a "division" of their being. Their body is placed in the grave, their soul enters Hell, and their spirit is sometimes left to wonder the earthly plane until put to rest.
What are some of your theories???

Here's a theory - Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Re: Thoughts On The Paranormal
The soul is not a divisible part of a person.
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life ; and man became a living soul.
A person does not 'have' a soul so much as a person IS a soul.
Your soul does not leave the body at death, rather the spirit leaves the body at death. Notice in Adam's case (whose image we bear at this present time) he was a physical body, which when the breath ('spirit') entered HE (Adam) BECAME a living soul.
A human body plus spirit = HUMAN SOUL.
When the person dies, the body returns to the earth, and the spirit returns to God.
In resurrection, the spirit returns to the body, which is transformed (see 1 Cor 15), and the person lives forever (in the case of the child of God).
In the case of the wicked, on resurrection they are judged, condemned, and executed by the Judgement of God, and are destroyed.
At that time, even death and the grave itself will be destroyed.
And the wicked will be no more remembered.
There are no dead people wandering the earth, except maybe in Hollywood.

And let me clarify this statement. when I say divisible, I mean in the sense YOU meant, as in 'the soul separates from the body and the spirit'.
The WORD of God is capable of dividing the soul and spirit asunder in a spritual, theological sense, as when the unsaved SOUL confronts the Word of God and their results a conflict between what is now in their spirit and what is going on their LIFE (ie conviction).
If we take Paul's statement about dividing the soul and spirit asunder LITERALLY (ie physically) then we must also believe preaching the WORD will split people's bones and marrow apart...
...regardless of how high pitched some preachers get, it ain't gonna happen.

In this context, does spirit mean "spirit" or "breath", or both?

Re: Thoughts On The Paranormal
Esaias,
Ontologically speaking a person is tripart, or a trichotomy (body, soul, spirit). The body (Gk. Soma) is the physical part of a person. The soul (psueche) is the seat of the thoughts and emotions (psyche). The spirit (pnuema) is one's "breath" or "living essence".
Essentially, the concept behind the theory I proposed is that one's body is buried in the grave. One's soul enters the afterlife. And one's spirit (in various situations) might linger.
Ancient Judaism believed that the immaterial part of a man could be divided up as follows:
1.Nephesh, related to natural instinct.
2.Ruach, related to emotion and morality.
3.Neshamah, related to intellect and the awareness of God.
4.Chaya, considered a part of God, as it were.
5.Yechidah, also termed the pintele Yid (the "essential [inner] Jew"). This aspect is essentially one with G‑d. The rabbis explained how various elements of the soul experience different realities upon death.

In Hebrew, you would be saying what? "Does ruach mean ruach or ruach, or both?"
