My answer to that is if patients with compromised immune systems are so vulnerable, the flu shot that they take should protect them. If the flu shot does not protect them, then the shot is clearly ineffective and should not be forced upon people.

But nobody really cared about the "safety of the patients" enough to make it mandatory before. Now that reimbursement dollars are connected to "patient safety" it is mandatory. Telling.

An Indiana hospital has fired eight employees, including at least three veteran nurses, after they refused mandatory flu shots, stirring up controversy over which should come first: employee rights or patient safety. The hospital imposed mandatory vaccines, responding to rising concerns about the spread of influenza.

Ethel Hoover wore all black on her last day of work as a nurse in the critical care unit at Indiana University Health Goshen Hospital. She said she was in "mourning" because she would have been at the hospital 22 years in February, and she's only called out of work four or five times in her whole career , she said.

"This is my body. I have a right to refuse the flu vaccine," Hoover, 61, told ABCNews.com. "For 21 years, I have religiously not taken the flu vaccine, and now you're telling me that I believe in it."

Which begs the question, since the SC decided women had rights to abortion, (my body, my choice ) why can't people refuse flu shots?
After all, it is injecting a foreign substance into our bodies.

Now that I have been openly discussing this issue I have been hearing things like this repeatedly. The incidents don't seem so isolated and seem under-reported.

The thing is that "patient safety" has only become so "important" since reimbursement dollars for medicare/medicaid have been tied into vaccine compliance.

My school has reimbursed me. Yay! I am happy for that but am still not impressed by the situation and what I had to go through. They are supposed to have some discussions about this at the school too so, hopefully someone else won't have to go through this and even more hopefully, someone who doesn't want the shot can get educated.
