A Tweet by TFT: Advice for Young Preachers

Actually this was a re-tweet, but this is sound advice!

Quote:
Here’s what I know about you. You did not surrender to God’s call on your life to perpetuate a specific style, model or approach to preaching. You didn’t say ‘yes’ to God in order to perpetuate an approach to anything. You said ‘yes’ to God in hopes that he would use you to impact your generation. And if that makes your heart beat a little bit harder, then allow me to push you a bit. If you’ve been called to reach this generation of unchurched people, then you must adopt an approach to ministry, and communication in particular, that advances that calling.

You don’t have the luxury of babysitting the previous generation’s approach to doing church. There’s no time for that. Besides, you’ve only got one life to give to advance this glorious cause. So invest it well. Make the necessary adjustments to your approach.

But... should we not learn from our elders and respect and heed authority? Should we not also rely on the wisdom of the elders that came before us?

oh myy... advice to further the downward spiral of many young preachers with great zeal and calling but little consecration.

I'll listen to the elders God has put in my life, thanks.

No! Ignore their advice and figure it all out yourself. But. Wait. If TFT is an elder, and we ignored that advice, .... Uh oh. I'm stuck in a loop!

Re: A Tweet by TFT: Advice for Young Preachers

You can change the method without changing the message. The simple fact is, tradition usually wins out - in fact, sometimes, religious tradition is kept on par with actual Biblical doctrine unfortunately.

I quote him often, but I remember a teaching session from Billy Cole where he addresses this very thing. He made mention that if you are in an area that would be more accomidating to have a Saturday evening service rather then Sunday - do it to reach people and don't get stuck on having to have a Sunday morning service.

I went to a church for years that always had a Sunday 10:00 a.m. and Sunday 6:00 p.m. service, they did it that way for years. In time, it was necessary to change the format...it is not rocket science, but if the pastor would have been to caught up on traditional church, he would have missed it.

We are reaching a time in this country in various area's, where traditional service times and activities will not work for a great majority of the lost we are supposed to be trying to reach. Not everyone works 9-5 or "dayshift" - there are some who rotate weekends, work nights and swing shift. We are going to have to look at the method at some point or just be satisfied with the same ol same ol.

I don't see his tweet as compromising, but eye opening. there will always be folks who use change as an excuse to fall away and do what they want, but that should not paralize the opportunities that change can bring.

IMHO - a church that is having revival will be full of people - some who "look" apostolic, and a plethora of folks who cut hair, wear pants, etc. If we spend time loving people and less time trying to win them to our "religion" God will move and as folks are open to Him, he will guide and lead to a more consecrated life.

Elder Tenney is the only Oneness pastor whom sermons I listen. I have much respect for him.

"If you’ve been called to reach this generation of unchurched people"

Anyone want to give "unchurched" a swing???
