"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Really its not that I didn't go because the weather, I just don't know if I want to. About 3 weeks ago I was seriously considering visiting. When I posted this thread I was still considering, and even now I'm not closing the door, I just don't feel motivated to go this week, or the next. The way I feel today I'd be content to never go back even to visit.

This week neither I nor my wife mentioned anything about visiting the UPC church.

For me, its attitudes like Bro. Epley's and those who blindly amen, that remind me of the religious sub culture aspect that I don't miss. I've had a good time hashing through some things on here, and they've brought some of the differences to the forefront. I don't have a problem with those differences, but I'd be open about them to any future upc pastor, and I don't know if they could handle those views or not. As Bro. Epley shows, some of these guys are comfortable where they are, and if they really wanted the truth, they would have found it.
With all respect in the world for Elder Epley (he knows I certainly do respect him), You do realize that the good Elder is not only NOT UPCI, but pretty much of the belief that the UPCI is far too liberal right?

Are you really saying that because an AMF guy teaches things you dont like, you wont go to a church the AMF guy thinks is far too liberal?

Because that just flat confuses me.

Re: Bombshell- Considering going back to the UPC

Sad to say not everyone loves truth. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I am told. Some believed in Jesus and others crucified Him. Some believed in the Apostles others stoned and beheaded them. And it has not changed. I have bought the truth and I am not going to sell it. My seat is not for sale. I am happy with the Lord and His church. I realized years ago I would never understand folks not loving truth because truth has been good to me. Now 51 years in the church and I am not tired yet. Love His message-methods-lifestyle. No complaint from me. If I lose my mind and leave the church it will not in any way diminish the church it was going great when I got in 51 years ago and if I leave tomorrow the message or lifestyle will not change. I will be the loser not the church.

I agree and am happy that you are happy. But the church is bigger than you think.

You're blind. The Church of Jesus Christ was visible, viable and powerful for the centuries before the sudden appearance of your little latter day sect in 1913.

Sometimes my wife and I have the "what if" conversation. What if the only 2 churches in town were the UPC church or the Baptist church what would we do.

I have struggled with that thought also. The only time I have ever had to test the water to see what it would be like was a year or so after my wife's back had gotten so bad she could no longer make the 45 minute drive to CC, sit for two hours, then drive back. She began going to the second morning service at a trinitarian charismatic church in our town. I continued to go to CC's early service then would race back to go to church with my wife.

I believe the people at that church were saved and sincere and I was blessed by the preaching and teaching. However I could never get over the fact they baptized in the titles only. I concluded I could not attend there.

Luckily we found another charismatic church that while not "Oneness" had a pastor who believed the correct baptism is in Jesus name so baptized people in the titles and Jesus name (both every baptism, not one or the other). He also was very familiar with Oneness doctrine and in that regard believed as I do about the amount of difference between that and trinitarianism. We attended that church about a year before our pastor released us to go help out in the new church plant our daughter and SIL were attending that had been started by the former Youth Pastor of the local UPC church where we are today.

Interestingly enough my parents, way back in the 1950's, faced this dilemma. They were UPC but moved to an isolated town where there was no Oneness church. They attended a Church of God church and my mom even taught SS. They met with the pastor and told him the situation and when my mom became a teacher she told the pastor she would not teach the trinity when those lessons came around and he was fine with that. A few years later my parents helped found the UPC church in that town that is still there today.
