Re: Router WiFi Question

I really appreciate all thes responses.

I guess there are several options...

Some would "boost" and "repeat" the signal while others would accomadate the hardline I already have in the house.

FWIW the router in the office generally has two or three devises on it - writes and wireless.

Yes buy a second wireless router and just plug the cable into the new router. When you do this the router plugged into the modem needs to act as a DHCP server and the other one not.

Then assign IP range for other devices. You can google how to do it. I've done it at our church. In fact I have three routers, one is not wireless

Otherwise since you already have a network cable ran then just buy a second router and plug that cable into the new router
Great! That's what I had wondered. Now, doing this wont effect the other building (wired and wireless)? The signal would in effect be going through two routers.

Hard wired you don't have to worry about signal loss due to being too far away or electric devices between routers or too many walls :-)

One router (the new one) would simply send and receive your signal to the other router which "connects" you to the internet

Each router would have it's own passkey (it can be the same key) but each router should have a different name (ie Netgear1 and Netgear 2)

Re: Router WiFi Question

No problem. It's fairly easy.

Re: Router WiFi Question

Make sure the 2 wifi routers are on different channels even though you say you can't get a good signal from the house. I've been told that they should be at least 2 channels apart for best results.

Actually, three channels if you want to make sure they do not overlap at all. So if one is on channel 1, the other should be on 4. I am the type to get into all our school access points and set the channels manually for best efficiency but if you don't want to mess with that (and most don't) just setting each router and AP to "auto" find a channel usually works just fine. I can't think of a case where 'auto' is not the default.
