What I mean by explicitly is that it doesn't give an exact formula to how to deal with wine or strong drink. But it does suggests that it is dangerous to deal with. The Bible teaches about modesty, but does not give us all the guidelines. What if the choir leader comes to church in a bikini and walks up to the platform and when she is questioned she replies that she feels it is modest. What specific scripture do I prove to her it is immodest.

I believe that is what God has given us the ministry for. If a person wants to be legalistic we can argue about anything. All things may be lawful, but not expedient. I believe the Holy Ghost will lead us away from potentially dangerous things. I want to flee temptation and shun the very appearance of evil. Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom and next thing you know he has moved in. I feel like you will never slip up and drink too much if you choose to abstain from it altogether.

touchy subject though. If you can walk that line I won't judge you, but the people God has called me to be accountable to and for, I am going to teach abstinence.

However, in light of Christian liberty, insisting that all abstain from alcohol is just as bad as insisting that all partake. In this matter, I believe abiding by personal conviction is best.
Right. I say teach the dangers associated with a drink or two, and each family should prayerfully consider it before the Lord. There is no need to issue an edict that says "you're damned if you do". Some might be, some might not. Every person's body reacts differently to it.

Our family preference is to stay away from it, but we do not judge or condemn someone for an occasional one or two. We just prefer to abstain, and that is our family's conviction. No preacher had to tell us that, but the Spirit has led us to that conclusion. But, I don't condemn or judge those who can handle one or two.

The Bible plainly teaches against drunkeness, not occasional drinking in moderation.

But I do believe that if one chooses to imbibe occasionally, they should be careful to respect the convictions and weaknesses of other believers around them.

Generally I enjoy wine one or twice a month.
My opinions as well. I come from a family of alcoholics and while I personally don't drink, i'm not going to judge those who do in moderation.

Jesus ate with sinners that were undoubtedly drinking. He even turned water into wine.

Do you use wine when taking communion?

The church I grew up with used wine. Never did understand that. Then we switched churches and they used grape juice so as not to create a double standard. I found out much later in life that the word wine in the bible could mean either juice or the fermented stuff.

Re: Social drinking?

Ya wanta drink? Help yourself. Who are we to "condemn" anyone. It would appear from reading this thread that drinking alcoholic beverages is not something folks would label as a sin. Same attitude watches a person playing with a loaded pistol and does nothing to stop the inevitable. AMAZING!

I own and handle loaded pistols all the time. I dont "play" with guns. There is a big difference in between playing with and correctly handling a loaded weapon. Often the difference is the attitude, purpose and education in proper firearm handling. The same applies with food and drink.
