Nevertheless Marvin Hicks was a widely admired conference speaker and highly respected in the UPC at one time. Sorry to hear of his passing.
I grew up in Texas in the 60's and 70's, in the UPC, Marvin Hicks was the best in Youth Camp and Campmeetings, and stirred the pride as he could out debate the best debaters from the CoC and Baptist ranks!!

But like you Steve, by the mid 70's, I no longer believed that debates were effective means of ministry. They were mean spirited and divided believers in Jesus, to condemn and hurt one another.

I have moved on, I believe Marvin mellowed in his later years, suffered a great deal of personal pain and loss. I loved him and am sorry for his passing, though it is apparent that he lived a long and full life. His battle and enduring is completed, and now he will be completed in the presence of the One he preached of for so long!! May God comfort all that knew and loved him.

First he used a lot bigger words than 98% of UPC preachers at the time and secondly he clearly had a LOT of annointing when you based the amount of annointing on the volume level of the speaker!

On a serious note, he really was an icon of 1970's UPC. Probably much of the 60's as well but I was too young to know. I never heard a bad word about this man. He had a reputation as passionate conveyor of what he believed in but was personally a very friendly and approachable man.
Yep, I attended four of his debates, loss enthusiasm the more I attended, and saw folks from the community that I knew were decent and kind Christians. I became embarrassed by the harshness and the mean spirited sports event type atmosphere. This was all a part of my movement from the UPC, and sectarianism.

Re: Marvin Hicks passed

As a young man I fondly remember listening to him debate on cassette tapes. The word was made so clear to me then, helped establish my love for the oneness of God. It was like a room full of bright lights illuminating the word from every angle. I thank God for these debates they helped people who were hypnotized by their leaders Trinitarian dogma see the Beautiful Mighty God in Christ. This wonderful legacy will continue I have copies of them on mp3 now, and I love to hand them out. I only wish I knew how to post them here. I feel like I had a good spirit when I just wrote that. Like Elder McMullen says... " I think I know what one is."

Re: Marvin Hicks passed

This website was officially endorsed by Marvin Hicks before his death. He was my pastor when I was a child in the early 70's in Texas.

If anyone has old tapes of him preaching, I am willing to pay the postage to have them shipped to me. I will convert them to mp3 and mail them back with the mp3 version.

Go to the contact page on the website to contact me. www.SundayNightLive.net
