Nevertheless Marvin Hicks was a widely admired conference speaker and highly respected in the UPC at one time. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I grew up in Texas in the 60's and 70's, in the UPC, Marvin Hicks was the best in Youth Camp and Campmeetings, and stirred the pride as he could out debate the best debaters from the CoC and Baptist ranks!!
But like you Steve, by the mid 70's, I no longer believed that debates were effective means of ministry. They were mean spirited and divided believers in Jesus, to condemn and hurt one another.
I have moved on, I believe Marvin mellowed in his later years, suffered a great deal of personal pain and loss. I loved him and am sorry for his passing, though it is apparent that he lived a long and full life. His battle and enduring is completed, and now he will be completed in the presence of the One he preached of for so long!! May God comfort all that knew and loved him.
